  • My partner and I bought a school bus and renovated it to live in.

  • We traveled across the country after nine months of work.

  • It was designed with an L-shaped layout for privacy and a bigger kitchen and bathroom.

We decided to move into something mobile because we couldn't commit to buying a house yet.

We bought this school bus for $3,500.Nicole Jones

The old school bus that my husband and I bought for just $3,500 was converted into our dream tiny home.

We had been living in Chicago, Illinois, and even though we didn't want to be in the middle of a city anymore, we couldn't decide where to plant roots.

We compromised by moving into something mobile so that we could determine where we wanted to eventually settle down.

The space was built in nine months and we have been living in it ever since. Here is what the experience has been like so far.

The final product has an L-shaped layout.

One of our favorite parts of our space is the L-shaped layout, which features a full living area, kitchen, wet bathroom, and queen-sized bedroom.

This layout allows for a bigger kitchen and bathroom.

Our kitchen is where the L-shape begins, with the counter extending into the middle of the bus. The cabinets are green and tie in the warm colors of the rest of the build. We want our guests to feel at home.

Our main living space has a pull-out couch that can be used as a guest bed. We have a permanent workspace and a place to eat our meals in the dinette.

We didn't want to have to sacrifice something that was important to us.

Our bathroom is on the opposite side of the kitchen wall.

I wanted a sink for the kitchen and a sink for the bathroom with different purposes.

The L-shaped layout was born out of the fact that the Vanity was important to me. We needed room for a sink, mirror, shower, and toilet in the bathroom, so we had to find a way to make it all fit.

The shower area features a rain shower and a skylight to give us extra headroom, because the bathroom is fully tiled.

We had no experience tiling before this project, but were very happy with how it turned out.

Our bedroom is where I like to sleep.

Before entering the bedroom, there are two closets, one for clothing and the other for our electric system.

We chose warm tones in our bedroom because I really like mustard yellows, burnt oranges, and neutrals, and it makes me happy when I enter it.

We were able to fit a desk for Charlie.

It took nine months for us to finish our build.

We immediately traveled to somewhere warm.Nicole Jones

The build took nine months. We jumped on the bus with our cat at the end of March and haven't looked back since.

Our first destination was warm. The bus we built in Wisconsin was cold.

Getting used to tiny living was easy.

The first couple of weeks were an adjustment period, but we have always made traveling a priority, so we are used to being in small spaces together.

We need to find a spot with service and make the most of our separate spaces in order to work.

We need internet because we both work full-time on the road. The place we are parked needs to have a signal for the bus to work.

We both have video meetings, so we needed separate workspace to do it. The L-shape layout gives us this.

Privacy can be hard to find in small spaces, so creating this separation made the transition a bit easier.

Finding good places to stay and paying for gas are some of the unexpected challenges of living tiny.

Our bus is self-contained with fresh water and solar power.Nicole Jones

We have made it our mission to chase sunshine and good weather, which means we are sometimes moving around more than we would like.

It is true that we are saving a lot of money by living tiny, but there are also costs that we incur on the road, like gas. We find free camping places on public land around the United States.

We are able to boondock for about two weeks at a time because our vehicle is self-contained. We have 100 gallons of fresh water, 1,050 watt of solar power, and a fridge-freezer combo, so we can live off-grid. During our build, this was a huge priority for us so we didn't have to pay for RV hookups.

The pros outweigh the cons of having to think about where you sleep each night.

We have no plans to leave the bus.

We haven't found a place we want to settle down permanently.Nicole Jones

We will continue our adventures in the future.

Our eyes have been opened to how many different ways there are to live in an alternative home.

We are having so much fun on the road that we are not ready to give up full-time traveling.

We haven't found the place we want to call home, but we're confident we'll find it along the way.
