UNC tops Duke in epic back-and-forth finish, ending Coach K's career (1:05)

North Carolina beats Duke in a wild finish to advance to its 12th championship game. The time is 1:05.

The career of Coach K is over. The Duke Blue Devil season ended with a loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. The legendary career of Mike Krzyzewski, who announced in June that he would retire following the season, comes to a close.

Krzyzewski was a fixture in college basketball, winning over 1,000 games and reaching 12 Final Fours. He produced legendary teams, including Christian Laettner, Grant Hill and Jay Williams. He was an assistant and head coach for five gold-medal winning teams.

Bobby Knight was the coach of the Army Black Knights when Krzyzewski played point guard. Krzyzewski was discharged from the Army in 1974. He joined the Indiana Hoosiers staff as an assistant in 1974.

It has been 49 years since Coach K was not on the sideline.

The current sport has some similarities to the current season.

NC State won the NCAA tournament and the national title game.

Kansas won its conference.

UCLA, which earlier in the season had its record 88-game winning streak end, still made the Final Four in the final season of Bill Walton.

It was a long time ago. In 1973, the last year of college basketball, there was no Coach K.

The 1972- 73 college hoops season ended with UCLA winning it all. The Bruins have won seven consecutive national titles with legendary coach John Wooden. In the title game against Memphis State, he was nearly perfect. He scored 44 points.

Coach Wooden looked at me and said, "I used to think you were a good player, but you missed that one shot."

In his senior season in 1973, he averaged 19.3 points and 14.7 rebound despite a back injury, despite losing in the Final Four.

The King stays the king

It was the first time a single artist would perform live in a satellite broadcast.

Elvis, wearing a lei and a white, bejeweled jumpsuit, sang 22 songs, which were aired live in parts of Asia and Oceania. It aired in Europe the next day.

NBC did not air the concert in America because they did not want to compete with the Super Bowl. Mercury Morris should keep the King away from his subjects.

The celly was blowing up

One engineer called his rival to dunk on him in the first cell phone call.

Bell Labs and Motorola were competing to make a portable, handheld cellular telephone. The father of the mobile phone, Martin Cooper, made the first call.

Who did you think I called? Cooper told the BBC that he called his counterpart at Bell Labs and told him he was calling from a real cell phone.

'The Exorcist' scared people around the globe

The scariest film of the year was The Exorcist.

  • Lalo Schifrin said he was asked to change the music because the sample in the trailer was so frightening.

  • People fainted. Moviegoers left their friends behind in the theater.

  • A study in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease found that it could cause psychosis in patients with mental health issues.

  • Pea soup has never been the same.

Happy birthday Fab Five

The early 1990s were dominated by Coach K and Duke. In the seven years from 1988 to 1994 the Blue Devil appeared in the Final Four. The Fab Five of the Michigan team of Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson came to Ann arbor in 1991 and were a part of that rivalry.

They were one of the most famous teams in college basketball history. The film shows the Fab 5 in a completely different light. The Fab Five can be seen on ESPN+.

The five players were born in 1973. The 1992 national title game was the culmination of the Duke-Michigan rivalry. In the 1991-92 season, the Blue Dukes defeated the UM in Ann Arbor and then went on to win the national championship.

Duke never lost to the Fab Five-era Michigan.
