I booked a first-class ticket on the train from New York City to Baltimore.

My ticket included access to the Metropolitan Lounge at Penn Station. For full disclosure, Insider paid for the trip.

I was surprised by a number of things about the trip, but I thought the perks of the trip were not worth the higher price.

Before I tell you what I was surprised by, you should know that I have traveled on multiple Amtrak trains before, and this was my first time in first class.

I have traveled on many Amtrak trains in coach and recently spent 60 hours on the train between Miami and NYC in bedroom and roomette accommodations, which cost hundreds more than my Acela ticket.

I was willing to try it on a shorter route because I realized I wasn't cut out for long haul train travel. The trip from NYC to Baltimore took about two and a half hours.

There are 13 cities where Acela can be found for regional trips around the Northeast. The ride was 20 minutes faster on Acela than it would have been on a typical train.

I was surprised by 14 things when I was on an overnight train ride.

I was surprised to learn that the train only has two classes: business and first.

I've been on every Amtrak train that has coach seating, but the trains only have business and first class seating.

I booked a standard ticket for $121 and then spent an extra $150 to upgrade to first class.

The fare I booked was about $100 cheaper than the same tickets in the next few weeks, according to a quick search.

I knew first class would be more expensive than a business class ticket, but I didn't think it would be more than double the price.

The cost to upgrade to first class was more expensive than the standard business class ticket.

Amtrak pricing strategy is influenced by several factors, including demand, departure, seasonality, route, city pair, class of service, and other market conditions.

When I arrived at Penn Station in New York, I had access to an exclusive lounge with free snacks and drinks. I was surprised to find that the perk is only available at a small portion of the stations.

The Metropolitan Lounge at Penn Station was a part of the appeal of a first-class ticket for me as a New Yorker, it was a quiet waiting area with free snacks and comfortable seats.

Business-class passengers can pay $50 to access the club, while first-class passengers can get in for free on the day of their trip.

I was surprised to find that the lounge is only available at a few stations on the train. Outside of New York, anyone traveling from Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Boston has access to a lounge. There are other stops on the train that do not offer this perk.

Insider requested comment from Amtrak about the perk only being available at a few stations.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of snacks available in the lounge, since I was traveling from NYC's Penn Station.

I was overwhelmed by the choices at the snack counter in the lounge. Kind bars, cookies, popcorn, candy, chips, and hummus were all I saw. Iced tea, coffee, and water were also free.

I ordered water, coffee, and a bar. I was given an extra one by the server.

I wish I would have asked for more treats on my trip.

I did not know that I could change my seat at any time after booking a ticket.

When I reserved a ticket, my seat was assigned. I later learned that it could be changed on their website before departure.

Seat maps are available on the website, but they only specify which direction each seat faces.

I was surprised that the first thing that was done on the car was to pick out the seats. Motion sickness is usually caused by facing the opposite direction that the train is moving.

I ended up in a seat in the direction the train was going.

I was surprised to find a row of single seats in the first class car, but I was happy that my seat was in one. I thought it gave me more space.

Each row on most trains had the same number of seats on either side of the aisle. There were two seats on one side and one seat on the other in the first class car. There were seats facing both directions.

I was fortunate to find that my seat was a single one, which gave me more space since I was traveling alone.

If you care about where you sit, I suggest that you make sure you know the direction the seat faces and whether it is in the singles or doubles row.

I thought the chairs would be comfortable, but they felt stiff.

The seats in first class were not as comfortable as they were initially thought to be.

I found the business-class seats to be slightly smaller and closer together, which made them more comfortable.

Insider asked for comment about the seats, but Amtrak didn't reply immediately.

After boarding, a complimentary drink was served in first class. The drink menu on the train had 37 options.

At the beginning of the ride, I received a complimentary drink and was able to choose from a variety of alcoholic and non- alcoholic beverages.

While the train was moving, my tray table couldn&t keep my orange juice from falling.

I regretted pouring my orange juice into the glass. I was disappointed to see that there wasn't a cup holder on my tray table, it was a bumpy ride. I was worried that the glass would fall. I should have left the juice in the bottle.

I was surprised that the food menu was so limited since the beverage menu had so many options.

I had four options to choose from. Food choices were limited for the cost of my ticket.

Insider asked for comment about the menu, but Amtrak didn't reply immediately.

I had a warm croissant and went with the fruit plate. I was surprised at how quickly the food came out.

Three minutes after ordering, my meal came out, and I was surprised to find that it included a croissant.

The fruit tasted good. Since I was on a train, I was surprised that every piece was just as good as the last. The croissant was still warm and delicious despite being a little less fresh to me.

Even though I was in first class, I went to the bathroom and found it to be very similar to the ones I have seen in standard cars.

In my experience, the bathroom in the train was very similar to the bathroom in other classes. I didn't notice any special, luxurious touches that would make it feel more like traveling in first class.

I have decided that the perks aren't worth the price now that I know about them.

My ride was pleasant, but with a limited menu and stiff seats, I didn't find my first class ticket worth $273. Next time, I will save my money and book a standard ticket for a ride.
