Savannah Marshall
Savannah Marshall has won all 12 professional bouts, with 10 knockouts

A potential clash with long-term rival Shields later this year is set up by the sensational knockout of Femke Hermans.

The referee Howard Foster waved off the fight after the Belgian challenger hit the canvas by a neutral corner in the third round.

There was no official announcement of Shields-Marshall taking place next, but negotiations are understood to be in the final stages.

After Marshall won at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, Shields entered the ring and went head-to-head with him.

Shields and Marshall have a rivalry dating back to their amateur days. She wants a second fight as a professional and for all of the middleweight belts to take place in the United Kingdom this summer.

Marshall said that they had had a couple of encounters in the ring with the boxer. I don't like the person and she doesn't like me.

  • As it happened: Marshall stops Hermans in three rounds

Shields said that he would come back and fight her in the UK. It's giving me an advantage to fight her in her hometown.

We need neutral fans to sway the judges. It could be in Wembley or the O2. That is fair to me.

Statement KO from Marshall

Hermans, a former super-middleweight world champion who had never been stopped, was a mandatory challenger who was expected to provide a stern test but one the Britons was expected to overcome.

Marshall received some last-second instructions from her coach before the first bell and looked relaxed, with her hands by her side, in a quiet opening round.

From the ringside, Shields looked on and laughed. Marshall came out with more intent in the second round, but her punches fell out of range.

As those ringside felt this could be a tough night for Marshall, the Silent assassin delivered a brutal one-punch knockout which shows just why she is the biggest knockout artist in women's boxing.

Marshall said that he caught her a couple seconds before she stumbled back.

The American does not see it that way, saying that he will match her with power, skills and defence. She is going to feel like an amateur.

Shields-Marshall - a decade in the making

Claressa Shields

Shields and Marshall have been at odds for a decade, but are finally going to settle their differences in a boxing ring.

The winner will be considered the number one pound-for-pound star of women's boxing, but there is more at stake.

Shields is the first male or female boxer to be undisputed champion in two divisions in the four-belt era, having won world honours at light-middleweight, middleweight and super-middleweight.

The self-assured Michigan fighter - the current the WBA,WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine middleweight champion - describes herself as the "greatest woman of all time".

Shields entered the ring for media duties earlier in the night, but the crowd chanted "Who are ya?" despite her achievements. She posed with her world titles and shiny Olympic medals.

Shields wants to erase a blemish from her record.

In 77 fights as an amateur and 12 professional bouts, she has only tasted defeat once, against Marshall at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in 2012

Shields thinks Marshall has been living off that victory for the past 10 years. She is upset by the lack of respect from her opponent. She doesn't think Marshall is on her level.

Marshall missed out on an Olympic medal, but still enjoyed a stellar amateur career. She turned professional in August of last year, nine months after Shields, and from that moment a rematch between the two stars has been in the making.

A genuine super-fight

Marshall won the world title in October 2020.

In February, Shields competed for the first time in the United Kingdom as a professional, beating Ema Kozin in a dominant points win. Marshall was not impressed by the performance at the Motorpoint Arena and was seen yawning during the broadcast.

Marshall and Shields were separated from each other by security when Shields was being interviewed after the victory.

The dislike for each other seems genuine, perhaps with a touch of pantomime, but Shields-Marshall has all the ingredients for a super-fight. They have two very different styles. It has the potential to attract casual sports fans if given a promotion.

The first female fight to headline New York's famed Madison Square Garden will take place on April 30th, when Ireland's undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor takes on seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano.

The addition of Shields-Marshall to the boxing schedule would cement what is already down to be historic, illustrious and game-changing year for women's boxing.
