The host of Jesse Watters Primetime tried to get a comment from Mel Gibson about his new movie, but he was unsuccessful.

The moment came at the end of the promotional tour for the new movie in which he plays the father of Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-priest played in the movie by Mark Wahlberg. An off-camera female voice told Watters: "Hello, Jesse?" before the question about the Oscars slap was asked. Thank you. Watters tried to ask if the actor thought he would have been treated the same way if Smith had slapped Rock.

Even though it has been almost a week since the incident, the question wasn't completely out of left field. Smith's resignation from the Academy was announced an hour or so prior. The Watters program is set to be released later this month in the US, and it's interesting that the man who is trying to market Father Stu appeared on the program in the first place.

Jesse Watters Primetime is the fastest-growing program in cable news since its launch in January, and it probably had something to do with the choice of interviewer.

Most-watched, and fastest-growing

Watters has the most watched program in all of cable at 7 pm on Fox, with both total viewers and the younger A25-54 demo. Jesse Watters Primetime has an average of 3.1 million viewers and 517,000 in A25-54, which is more than CNN and MSNBC combined.

The first quarter ratings performance of Fox News was the only one in which the cable news network made year-over-year ratings gains. During the three-month period that began in 2022, CNN and MSNBC continued to experience ratings declines, while Fox recorded its 81st consecutive quarter as the most-watched network in basic cable.

The experiment on Fox that paid off well was giving new programming slots to both Watters and Gutfeld.

Gutfeld's is the highest-rated program in all of cable news on the basis of total views at 11 pm. Gutfeld!, featuring the veteran Fox host's signature brand of acerbic humor, quickly shook up the late-night landscape upon its debut. Gutfeld's show is a bit lighter with more of the banter and shtick associated with it.

Shaking up late-night

Gutfeld! found a void in the market. The show has averaged almost 2 million viewers and 347,000 in the younger demo since it was launched in April. The program was the second highest-rated late-night show after Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The audience for Gutfeld! is more ideological than any CNN program, with more Democrats, Republicans, and self-styled independents.

The success of both Gutfeld's and Watters' shows has to do with the fact that Fox News Channel gave them a time slot of their own. It is political commentary for Watters. The host of Gutfeld's late-night show is more entertaining than Watters because his audience expects humor.

Fox vs. CNN

CNN's new streaming service CNN+ finally came to fruition on March 29 after a long wait.

The Fox rival went on a hiring spree and invested millions of dollars into its new paid subscription-based service. Anderson Cooper and Jake Tapper were tapped to host shows for CNN+.

CNN is betting that while Cooper and Tapper are known for hard-hitting journalism, they will also be able to draw viewers with their content. In Tapper's case, he is hosting a book club show for the streaming service, while Cooper is fronting two programs for CNN+.

Anderson Cooper Full Circle is a program in which the newsman will interview authors, entertainers,Mindfulness experts and community leaders, with a special focus on stories outside of the nation's capital. Parental Guidance with Anderson Cooper is the second show.
