Russian forces have been trying to seize the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv since February 24, but have been met with fierce resistance across the country. Mass graves have been used in other Ukrainian cities due to the high death toll on both sides.

The Defense Ministry of Russia said last week that it would reduce its military assaults on Kyiv. The deputy defence minister of Ukraine said on Saturday that the country had regained control of the whole region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Saturday that Russian troops were leaving mines around Ukrainian homes and creating a "catastrophic" situation for civilians.

Zelenskyy said that it is not possible to return to normal life even at the territories that we are taking back.
