The primary thing to do when you see those blue and purple bubbles on the beach is to jump up and down.

Don't pick them up!

Spring on South Florida beaches is not limited to swimmers. Spring is about the return of the Portuguese.

The sea creatures have enough juice to sting even when they are immobile on the beach, so they are best viewed from afar.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue sent a warning about strong winds and currents that brought man-o-war to South Florida beaches.

Heading to one of #OurCounty's beaches? Keep an eye out for Portuguese man o' war! Beachgoers should avoid stepping or touching this animal. The war in Miami-Dade and Broward has been noticed by beachgoers.

What is a Portuguese man o’ war?

In this Feb. 20, 2003 file photo, Portuguese man o’ wars were plentiful on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The long, dangling tentacles with powerful stinging cells are not visible as they are on the bottom side of the warm-sea siphonophores.

The Portuguese man is a species of sphinx, a group of animals that are closely related to jellyfish.

Why is it called the name?

The war in Portugues resembles 18th-century Portuguese warships. The wind and sea currents propel them.

The man who likes warmer waters in the tropics has a balloon-like float and its colors can vary. The float can be blue, violet or pink and can be up to six inches above the waterline.

What makes them a pain?

You can find long strands of tentacles and polyps under the floating bubble, which can grow to an average of 30 feet.

The venom of the stinging nematocysts in the tentacles can be fatal to small fish and crustaceans.

The man's war sting is not as deadly as a small fish because our body mass is larger. In rare cases, the sting can cause an allergic reaction in some people, and in some cases it can cause heart failure. When war washes up on the sand and bakes on the beach for weeks, those long blue tentacles contain venom.

What to do if you’re stung

There are some tips from American Oceans.

Get the tentacles off of your skin. Be careful how you do that. If you get stung there, don't take them off with your bare hands. According to experts, wash them off with salt water and not fresh water because fresh could cause the sting to become more intense. You can use an object, like a stick or utensil, to remove the tentacles from you.

Ice the stung area. After 30 minutes or so, the swelling and pain should go away.

If you are having trouble breathing, get medical attention.

Listen to the lifeguards. Do you get out of the water? Keep an eye out for flags posted on the shore warning of war. If you see them, let the lifeguard know. Sometimes they look like a blue plastic bag floating on a wave. They are not bags left behind by spring breakers.
