The Ukrainian flag has been raised over the Chernobyl nuclear plant after Russian forces completely withdrew, the state nuclear agency said on Saturday.

The Ukrainian flag was raised over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the anthem was sung, according to a Telegram statement.

The agency announced on Thursday that Russian forces were starting to withdraw from the plant after suffering a significant dose of radiation.

The US defense official said Russian troops were leaving the facility.

Russia said it would scale back military operations in the north of the country.

Russian forces invaded Chernobyl in February. Russian troops forced workers to stay on-site for close to a month before allowing another group of co-workers to switch with them.

Russian soldiers drove armored vehicles through the most contaminated area of Chernobyl without protective gear, according to two Ukrainian staff.

On Friday, the UN atomic watchdog said it was opening an investigation into Russian soldiers who had been exposed to radiation.

Scientists from the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants have said that looters were able to take radioactive isotopes used to calibrate instruments, and nuclear waste left over from the 1986 nuclear accident, because of Russia's invasion of the exclusion zone.

The Ukrainian defense ministry said that Russian troops took kettles, lab equipment, and radiation before leaving.
