Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.
A statement from the actor was issued Friday afternoon.
I will accept all consequences for my actions. Smith said in the statement that his actions at the Academy Awards presentation were shocking.
I betrayed the trust of the academy. Smith said that he deprived other nominees and winners of their chance to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.
Smith resigned two days after the academy met to begin proceedings against him for violating the group's standards of conduct.
Smith hit Rock on the stage on Sunday after Rock made a joke at the expense of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. He won the best actor award for his role in King Richard.
Rock declined to file charges when asked by police.
