Alopecia is not laughing. Chris Rock was at the Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Most of us have seen Will Smith hit Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

Pinkett Smith has a close haircut because she suffers from a disorder that causes hair loss. Pinkett Smith was upset by Rock's wisecrack, which launched her husband on stage for the now-infamous confrontation.

I can't condone Smith's violent act, but I do understand his instinct to protect his wife in that moment. My wife Nichole also suffers from alopecia, and there has been nothing funny about it.

She said thatlopecia is one of the most difficult things she has had to deal with.

No one except me. I have witnessed the emotional toll losing her hair patches has taken. I held her hand, dried her tears, and even the razor and scissors that she used to shave off her hair.

It is difficult to watch someone you love in pain. Smith's gut reaction to protect and defend his wife at all costs against the cruel and insensitivity of others is something I can empathise with. I want to slap more than my fair share of wise guys. There is a reason to hit everybody, as Rock famously said during one of his stand-up comedy routines. You don't do it.

Smith missed a chance to educate America and empower the millions of people with alopecia by using his fist instead of his voice. The 6.8 million people in the U.S. and 147 million people worldwide who have or will develop a hair loss condition should be the topic of conversation.

For as much love and support Will thought he was showing Jada, violence is not the answer, my wife said.

Millions of women, men and children deal with the daily battle of living with Alopecia in a world that defines beauty standards by the hair on our heads.

Rio Allred of Indiana took her own life because she was being bullied because of her hair color, but the Oscars controversy is getting more media coverage. It was a slap in the face.

Jamie Elmore is the editor-in-chief of Bald Life Magazine and he has created a safe place for people to share their hair loss stories. The first issue of the magazine featured a story on Ayanna Pressley, a Massachusetts Congresswoman who is a Cincinnati native.

Society has enforced a lie that the narrow vision of beauty is reserved for those with a full head of hair.

I know that. My wife is very brave and beautiful. She had to go to work the next day after shaving her head. She was working at a school. I could see the fear and worry in her eyes as she headed for the door.

What will the kids say? What will the teachers and staff do? Will people look at me, laugh, and talk behind my back?

I expected her to think twice before going to the door. No one would have blamed her. It was a big step into a new world. She forged ahead despite her concerns. I wanted to go with her, to protect her, but I knew she had to do her own thing. I have never been prouder and have seen many brave things.

She confessed to me when she got home that she cried throughout her first day at work and kept a low profile. With each passing day, she became more comfortable with her new look and was able to return to school. She was becoming an inspiration to other women who had been suffering silently with alopecia, because she had been.

Nichole said that being compared to G.I. Jane was taken as a compliment. Jada Pinkett Smith is not as far away as I am in their walk.

She said that people will take the time to learn about and understand a condition.

Stories like my wife's deserve to be celebrated and respected. Chris Rock getting slapped on one of the world's biggest stages was unfortunate, but even more regrettable is that Smith wasted a chance to teach the world that bald is beautiful.
