According to a source, the Buccaneers have re-signed running back Giovani Bernard to a one-year deal.
The veteran salary benefit, which comes out to $1.12 million for Bernard's nine years of league service, plus a $152,500 signing bonus, is the reason for the deal, according to a source.
Bernard was a third-down back for the Bucs last season. In 12 games, Bernard had 58 yards on eight carries, but he had 23 receptions for 123 receiving yards and three touchdown.
Bernard was placed on injured reserve last season because of hip and knee injuries, but he was activated in time for the playoffs. He ran for 44 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown and had five catches for 39 yards in the playoffs.
Bernard will once again be used as a third-down pass-catcher for quarterback Tom Brady with Leonard Fournette and KeShawn Vaughn expected to back him up. This move does not preclude the Bucs from drafting a running back to compete for that role, as they have done a lot of homework in this area.
