  • He did not like that John Kelly monitored the White House switchboard.

  • According to CNN, Trump would often tell people to hang up and call him back.

A new report from CNN sheds light on how former President Donald Trump moved calls to his cell phone, amid confusion over a 7-hour gap in the White House logs on the day of the insurrection.

The in-house phone system is supposed to be used by White House officials, but Trump used his cell phone instead.

The White House switchboard was monitored by John Kelly, Trump's chief of staff, as part of his efforts to streamline communication and limit the number of outside voices trying to influence the former president's opinion.

According to CNN's sources, Kelly's goal was to get Trump to stop using his cell phone so much, but his switchboard sleuthing had the opposite effect.

A former Trump official told CNN that Trump hated people knowing who he spoke to, including from the residence at night. He would tell those who called him on the White House phone to call him back on his cell phone.

His use of a cell phone may explain why calls from the Oval Office that morning did not show up.

The switchboard was only used in the White House residence, but not in the Oval Office, according to CNN. He had staffers place calls for him on his mobile phones, rather than through the switchboard.

During the early stages of his presidency, it was reported that Trump used a phone without any security features to hide his calls from foreign intelligence agencies.
