Donald Trump isn't deserting the far-right freshman lawmaker even as other top Republicans reach their breaking point in the wake of Cawthorn.

On Saturday, Trump is holding a rally in North Carolina. Kevin McCarthy publicly rebuked Cawthorn for his suggestion that DC elites propositioned him to join an orgy and that he saw someone else do a key bump of cocaine.

McCarthy told reporters that Cawthorn would have to earn back his trust after he met with him on Wednesday.

McCarthy said that Cawthorn admitted to him that he exaggerated some of his statements. Repeated requests for comment have not been responded to.

The state of North Carolina deserves better leadership and that is why Sen. Tillis endorsed one of the primary challengers. The state's other senator who is retiring has also called Cawthorn an embarrassment.

In my opinion, Mr. Cawthorn hasn't demonstrated much in the way of results over the last 18 months.

Cawthorn is in a precarious situation with Trump. He endorsed a different candidate who lost to Cawthorn. As North Carolina was drawing up new Congressional maps, Cawthorn tried to move to another district. Cawthorn is back where he started after that failed move.

Before and after being sworn into office, Cawthorn has sparked controversy. McCarthy admonished him after he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has sparked even more drama with his recent comments suggesting that House of Cards was closer to real-life in Washington, particularly in its depictions of sex and drug use.

I look at a lot of these people, a lot of them that I have looked up to through my life.
