There were sexy shirtless photos of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the 2000s. We can jog your memory.

Putin wanted Russian citizens to think of him as a rugged, athletic outdoorsman, and was often photographed swimming and horseback riding.

When Putin became prime minister in 1999, he was 47 years old, and then president in 2012 at the age of 69. A new report published by investigative Russian outlet Proekt found that the leader keeps multiple doctors on hand at all times, even keeping cancer specialists on call permanently.

We knew his back and spine were damaged because of Putin's athletic ability. According to Proekt, Putin sustained several sports injuries from falling off horses, and that during the early 2000s he was temporarily stunned and couldn't get to his feet. The president was limping so much during a TV appearance in 2012 that the Kremlim instructed media to only use still photos and cut video footage of him walking, and he has since been bowled over by a veteran ice hockey player during an exhibition.

That doesn't mean that Putin doesn't get treatment, including antler blood baths. Other suggest that Putin may be struggling with cancer since he travels with a list of doctors on call at all times.

Putin and Lukashenko went skiing together. Two intensive care specialists, a neurologist, a dermatovenerologist, two ENTs, and an oncology surgeon all stayed at the same resort.

According to the report, Selivanov has been with the president for 166 days and has been near him whenever he has left the public eye. Two doctors fly to Putin more often than Selivanov.

That is significant, because diseases like thyroid cancer are usually diagnosed by an otolaryngologist. An oncologist and a surgeon help the patient.

There is no shame in physical injuries or disabilities of any kind, and chronic pain or illness shouldn't prevent anyone from being a leader. Putin and his counsel see the admission of sickness as a sign of weakness.

It's sad that a 69-year-old can't let people know he's struggling with a serious illness. Since FDR's tenure, it seems not much has changed for both disability rights and visibility.

For someone with Putin's immense power, the idea that he might be struggling with serious health concerns is a matter of interest.
