Several Republican Party leaders in North Carolina are supporting the primary challenger to Rep. Madison Cawthorn.
On Thursday, North Carolina Sen. Tillis criticized Cawthorn for falling well short of what Western North Carolina expects from their representatives.
In a letter to the editor, Tillis wrote that Chuck Edwards would never disgrace Western North Carolina with a consistent pattern of juvenile behavior, outrageous statements, and untruthfulness.
The 11th Congressional District deserves a congressman who is dedicated to their work.
Chuck Edwards is a conservative leader who delivers conservative results. He will never give up on his day job in order to find a celebrity in Washington DC.
The Associated Press reported that House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger of North Carolina had endorsed the presidential candidate.
Moore told WNCN-TV that Cawthorn did not deserve to be elected to Congress.
Moore said that if you have clowns in office, you can't get somewhere. I mean, some of these ridiculous recent comments that continue to build on one another.
On any given day, Cawthorn is an embarrassment, according to Sen. Richard Burr, an outgoing senior GOP senator from North Carolina.
GOP lawmakers from outside the state rebuked Cawthorn.
The congressman from Nebraska told CNN that Cawthorn's comments were terrible.
The GOP leadership was incensed when Cawthorn claimed that he had seen members of the DC elite use cocaine in front of him and had also been invited to orgies. Kevin McCarthy publicly rebuked Cawthorn, saying the latter had lost his trust.
In March, Cawthorn sparked controversy when he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "thug" and labeled the Ukrainian government an "evil" organization.
Cawthorn has remained defiant despite the criticism.
The radical left, the establishment and the media want to take me down. I will not stop fighting. I will not bow to the mob.
They want to stop the America First movement. He said he was not going anywhere.
