Succession is more important to Arians than the Hall of Fame (0:51)

The Pro Football Hall of Fame doesn't mean as much to Bruce as his legacy does. (0:51)

It was always his dream to hand a head-coaching job to a member of his staff, and reports of tension between himself and Tom Brady were not true.

There was no better time than right now to make the decision, as his family played a big part in his decision.

A number of people have asked why you are stepping away from a chance to go to the Hall of Fame and win another Super Bowl. This has been a dream of mine for a long time. They knew I wanted one of my guys to take over.

He said that he contemplated leaving his post as the head coach of the Buccaneers after the season, but it was not the right time. He said after Brady decided to return to the team, there was no better time to pass the torch than now.

Brady sat in the front row at the news conference. He said he has a great relationship with the quarterback.

Everyone of the players has gotten angry. Including him, and I pointed to Brady. That is nothing new. We have a good relationship. People have to write. It couldn't be further from the truth.

In three seasons as the head coach of the Buccaneers, he went 31-18 and led the team to victory in Super Bowl LV, the highest win percentage of any coach in the history of the team. He won five playoff games with the Bucs. The Ring of Honor will be added to this season by the team.

This will be the second head-coaching job for the 58-year-old, who was previously the head coach of the New York Jets. He was interim coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2011.

Usually when people are fired, they blame everyone else. When asked about what he learned from his time as Jets coach, the first thing he did was look within himself.

When he was with the Jets, he had to face Brady twice a season, but he was looking forward to having him as his quarterback.

I think of the guy. I think we are more alike than you can ever know, he said.

"I'm just going to be me, as far as succeeding Arians is concerned." I cannot be him, but I will take advice from the other coaches on his staff.

He said that when he first moved to New York, he tried to do things the right way and he ended up regretting it. I will do it my way.

Larry Foote and Kacy Rodgers will be the co-defensive coordinators. The defensive plays will be called by Bowles this season.
