The benefits of using energy as a tool of American global strategy have been discovered by the Biden administration. One positive outcome of the president's trip to Europe last week was the announcement of a new partnership with the European Union to cut Europe's dependence on Russian energy. The United States will increase its sales of liquified natural gas to Europe by 50% by the year 2030. Europe will no longer have Russian gas. Europe will develop expanded gas storage facilities, build port infrastructure, and make gas-powered facilities more efficient. President Joe Biden said Friday that it was not the right thing to do from a moral standpoint. Europe's dependence on energy from Russia is a long-term investment in stability. The positive aspects of promoting American energy influence should have been understood by the White House. This strategy was laid out by Donald Trump in order to reduce Russia's leverage in Europe. The approach was included in a larger trade deal with the EU. The Humanitarian crisis is caused by Biden's sanctions on Afghanistan. The effort to marginalize Russian energy influence was reversed by the Biden administration. The White House dropped sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 project in 2021. It was supposed to be a way of mending ties with Europe. It was clear at the time that the deal rewarded Russia and could potentially cause trouble in Eastern Europe. President Zelenskyy believed that the Kremlin was using Nord Stream 2 to increase European dependence on Russian energy and to marginalize and weaken Ukraine. There are fears that a Russian invasion could be aided by the fact that Moscow will no longer have to worry about the gas infrastructure in Ukraine. It was never clear what leverage the US would have over Russia if it existed. The destruction of Mariupol shows a cruel bully not getting his way. With Russian troops poised to invade, the White House was fighting off attempts to reimpose sanctions. The war in Ukraine came as predicted, as the cards were handed to Putin by Nord Stream 2. The American leverage was not real. The Trump strategy is to turn Europe away from dependence on Russia by using national power and advantage. The United States has become an energy giant in recent years due to increasing production of oil and natural gas. The United States became a net energy producer in 2019. That made the country more self-sufficient in energy and gave policymakers new tools to shape global stability. Higher energy output lowered global prices and boosted the U.S. gross domestic product. The surge in energy production gave the US more flexibility in addressing world crises. Some heroes don't wear capes. Zelenskyy is with Putin. The Biden administration's initial hostility to fossil fuels and the current energy price spike show the importance of keeping energy production growing. The White House had to give a nod to renewable energy in the new deal, but this is a token move to appease progressives. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission abruptly ramping back on imposing strict new environmental guidelines on natural gas pipelines was a more accurate reflection of the Biden administration's direction.
