Brian Cashman: Yankees Kept from World Series by ‘Illegal and Horrific’ Astros Action

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is angry about the Houston Astros cheating scandal.

Cashman blamed the Astros for the Yankees' ongoing World Series dry spell and called their actions during the American League Championship Series "illegal and horrific."

I get offended when I hear we haven't been to the World Series since 2009. It was drafted well, traded well, developed well and signed well. The only thing that derailed us was a cheating circumstance.

The Yankees lost to the Astros in seven games in the ALCS.

There were rumors that the Astros were doing something illegal after they won the World Series.

Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic wrote a report about the extent of sign-stealing within Major League Baseball.

Four people with the Astros, including pitcher Mike Fiers, told Rosenthal and Drellich that the team used a video camera in center field to steal signs from opposing teams.

At least two uniformed Astros players got together to plan a scheme that would allow them to get signs from opposing teams.

Fiers said that they were playing the game the wrong way.

Rosenthal and Drellich said that the camera feed was connected to a television monitor on the wall steps. Team employees and players would watch the screen, decode signs and relay what the pitch was going to be in a loud noise.

The maximum financial penalty allowed by league rules is $5 million. The team forfeited picks in 2020 and 2021.

The general manager and manager were suspended for the 2020 season. Both men were fired by the Astros for their role in the scandal. No players were reprimanded.

New York has made the playoffs every year. In each of the past two seasons, it has not advanced past the ALDS. The Yankees and Astros met again in the playoffs in the ALCS, which Houston won in six games.
