Los Angeles County residents who are at least 50 years old can receive a second booster shot.

Those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines can get a fourth shot if they received a third jab.

A number of sites will open initially to accommodate those who need a second booster, and other locations may soon be available as well.

L.A. County is moving quickly to offer the additional shots, which are only available to people 50 and older. It was not clear if the timelines in other counties were the same.

Here is what we know.

Where can I get a second booster?

The second booster dose will be available at the following locations.

  • Eugene A. Obregon Park is in East L.A.

  • The park is named after Ted Watkins.

  • The Balboa Sports Complex is in Encino.

  • The center is for senior citizens.

  • Market Street Center is located in Santa Clarita.

  • The Oasis Park is in Palmdale.

  • The arts and sports complex is in the city.

There is more information on these and other vaccination sites at VaccinateLA County.com.

Are there other options?

The additional boosters may be available from other providers, but those who are interested should check ahead.

The second booster shot will need to be adjusted before it can be offered by Kaiser Permanente, as it is waiting for additional clinical guidance from the CDC.

When the Centers for Disease Control issues clinical guidance, Kaiser will administer second booster doses according to that guidance, and as soon as our systems and processes can be updated to safely administer these doses to the correct populations.

The FDA stated that the initial booster dose is critical in helping to protect all adults from the potentially severe outcomes of COVID-19.

Why is this happening now?

The director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research said that current evidence suggests that protection against serious outcomes from COVID-19 waned over time.

The CDC recommends that people with weakened immune systems who got the single-shot Pfizer or Moderna vaccine should get a fourth dose, as well as people with moderate or severely compromised immune systems who got the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

What are experts saying about when to get jabbed?

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong said in an interview that he would want his relatives to get the second booster shot if he were advising them.

Chin-Hong said that getting a second booster shot is less important for a healthy person in their 50s. Chin-Hong said that a second booster shot would allow them to get a boost in their immune system.

It might be helpful for people who are traveling to a wedding or another country to take a fourth dose.

It will take more time for researchers to figure out how much benefit people will get from a fourth dose of vaccine. Chin-Hong said there was a big benefit after a second dose and again after the first booster. The additional benefit after the second booster isn't as significant according to early data from Israel.

The second booster may be worth it for older people. Chin-Hong said that the second booster is safe. It is well-tolerated.

Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, an infectious disease expert at UCLA, said: "We do note waning immunity following the third dose." In some studies, a fourth dose can bring the level back up to what it was before. Kim-Farley said in an interview that it would imply additional protection.

The chair of the Department of Medicine at UC San Francisco recommends that people who are older or at higher risk get the booster. Wachter said that he thought the second booster would be beneficial for those at lower risk.
