Morbius is one of the worst reviewed superhero movies of the modern era, even though it was not expected to be a hit.
I saw Morbius last night, but it's still miles below most superhero movies to come out in the last decade, save a few. It stacks up to some terrible classics.
This is some truly rarified air, as you can see. Whatever the opposite of rarified air would be. Critics hated it, but fans loved it, like we see with Venom and its sequel. I would be surprised if Morbius and Leto got the same amount of support as Venom. I won't go into the movie because of the leaks, but it seems like a movie that may end up being universally disliked.
If you're wondering why Sony made a Morbius movie in the first place, and are making a bunch of weird Spider-adjacent movies like Kraven and Madame Web, it's this twisted rights issue where Sony essentially has to keep pumping out. Sony needs to have this side universe going at the same time as the main one. It's a weird situation, and sometimes it works out well, but Morbius may be a sign of a lot of bad movies to come, unless they can figure out a way to make these obscure villains work.
We will see how Morbius performs at the box office and what the audience think of the film. I would expect scores to be higher than what critics are saying. I doubt it. We will find out soon enough. I don't think many people are going to be looking for more superhero movie roles with the addition of Leto.
