According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, Holloway has finalized a six-year deal to return to his alma mater. St. Peter's made a strong offer to keep him, but the school couldn't compete with the money of other schools.

In his final year at the helm of the Pirates, he led the team to the Sweet 16. He holds the all-time program record with .
Prior to taking the helm at St. Peter's, Holloway spent eight seasons as an associate head coach of the Pirates. The staff led the team to the title.
The Pirates have only had one other former player to become head coach.
