A video of a teenage boy in India telling a reporter that classrooms are more important than temples has gone online. A clip of a local reporter from SM News interviewing a boy from Varanasi city in the northern Indian state of UP has gone viral on social media. The boy said he wants to become an Indian Administrative Service officer when he grows up. The teen talked about the merits of schools when the reporter asked about going to temple. The young man said that he would rather be in a classroom than in a classroom. He reasoned that God has not blessed them. Education will. The reporter asked him about his caste, a social system that divides Hindus into rigid hierarchical groups and has been used for discrimination in Indian society. The boy said he was from the Chamar community. The reporter remarked that he was from the Chamar community and that he said this with pride. Chamars are classified as a Scheduled Caste under modern India's system of affirmative action. Chamar is a derogatory term in India. Since 1948, discrimination based on the caste system has been banned in India, but the upper castes still have societal privileges and the lower castes still have limited job opportunities. The teen admires Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, a member of a low-caste community who went on to become a notable Indian scholar, politician, jurist, social reformer and author of the Indian constitution. Leading public movements that advocate for marginalized communities were aided by the title Babasaheb. He asked the teen why he would want to worship the god but not the man. The boy said thatBabasaheb gave them reservation and constitution. We don't go to a temple, we go to schools. God has not given us anything. I would prefer to attend a school. The two-minute clip has been widely shared across social media platforms, receiving many comments from social media users who were impressed by the boy's response. The journalist, who posted the video on the social networking site, wrote: "Kids like him give us the hope that India hasn't lost everything to the saffron mobs."
Those who believe that one can achieve success by adhering to the teachings of both schools and temples disagreed with the boy's comments.
