  • There were calls for Clarence Thomas to step down from the SCOTUS cases.

  • The GOP leader said that the performative outrage was a political hit.

  • Several Democrats have called for Thomas to step down from the court.

Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell on Wednesday decried criticism of Associate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over his handling of January 6 related cases, dismissing calls for the jurist to resign as an inappropriate pressure campaign.

The Kentucky Republican who voted to confirm Thomas to the Supreme Court in 1991 rejected the concerns as a coordinated effort to overturn the decision.

McConnell said on the Senate floor that the left was trying to delegitimize the Supreme Court.

The Washington Post and CBS News reported on 29 text messages exchanged between former Trump White House chief of staff MarkMeadows and his wife, conservative activist Ginni Thomas, in which she urged the White House to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. More than two dozen Democratic lawmakers have demanded that Thomas not be involved in cases relating to the January 6 insurrection and give a written explanation of his decision to not be involved in previous cases. Prominent legal ethics experts are concerned about a conflict of interest for the husband of Ginni Thomas.

McConnell dismissed calls for Thomas to resign or be impeached.

He said that House members are talking about getting rid of their party's impeachment addiction for a third year in a row. This outrage is not serious. This is a political hit, part of the liberals long quest to delegitimize the court.

The indictment of Thomas was posted on Tuesday and stated that his refusal torecuse himself from matters involving his wife required an investigation.

McConnell argued that Democrats have sought tobully conservative justices based on spurious accusations about fake ethical problems or partiality.

He said that the new campaign was a continuation of the well-worn pattern. The justice and the entire court should ignore it.

McConnell criticized Schumer for his comments in 2020 in which he said that Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch and Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas would pay the price if they tried to curtail abortion rights.

He said that in 2020 the Democratic Leader stood on the steps of the Supreme Court and threatened multiple Justices if they did not reach a policy outcome that liberals wanted.
