Tiger Woods' participation in Masters would be 'phenomenal' for golf, Rory McIlroy says

One of Tiger Woods' competitors said it would be great to have the 15-time major champion in the field.

For golf and for the Masters tournament, to have Tiger there would be phenomenal,& said the golfer in San Antonio, where he is competing in this week's Valero Texas Open. Obviously, it does. Whenever Tiger Woods is there, anything he does in the game of golf is heightened. It would be great for him to be there.

Tiger Woods played 18 holes with his son, Charlie, and a close friend, on Tuesday at Augusta National, while four-time major champion, and close friend of Woods, McIlroy, was there.

He was there on Tuesday and he was trying to see if he could compete.

Since the final round of the 2020 Masters, where he last played, Woods has not played in an official PGA Tour event. He finished in a tie for 38th after shooting 4-over 76 in the final round.

The Masters, the first major championship of the season, has an expected 91 participants, including five-time champion Woods. He hasn't said whether he's playing. His first Masters victory was 25 years ago.

This would be the first time Woods tried to return to Augusta National after a long absence. Woods won the Masters in his first major championship in 11 years after multiple knee and back surgeries.

It would be even more impressive if he could play next week. Woods had serious injuries to his leg and foot in a car wreck. The SUV that he was driving crossed over two oncoming lanes, hit a curb and upended a tree on a downhill stretch in Rolling Hills Estates, just outside Los Angeles. He was wearing a seatbelt, and officers found him sitting in the SUV.

An ambulance took Woods to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He had a broken fibula in his right leg. He told reporters at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas that doctors almost had to amputate his leg.

I have said this many times, but he won the Masters two years ago, and where he was with his body and what he had to do to get back to being healthy.

In December, Woods and Charlie played in a tournament. He was allowed to use a golf cart, but he did some walking.

The sheer will and perseverance is incredible, and he likes to prove himself wrong. He is a wonderful addition to the game regardless of when he comes back. The game of golf is better when he is playing.
