Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) addresses reporters after the weekly policy luncheon on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

McConnell doubled down on his defense of Justice Clarence Thomas, accusing the political branches of being "clumsy" about Thomas' handling of cases related to the 2020 presidential election.

After days of criticism, McConnell made a comment about the reports that the wife of Clarence Thomas urged the White House chief of staff to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

McConnell dismissed calls for Thomas to step down from cases related to the Capitol riot.

Justice Thomas has a long history of excellent service on the court. McConnell said that the justice and the entire court should ignore all this.

Thomas is a great American and an outstanding justice.

This clumsy bully from the political branches is beyond the pale. McConnell said Justice Thomas has modeled fidelity to the rule of law for more than 30 years.

The Washington Post and CBS News reported on the outreach of Thomas.

If former President Trump runs again, the calls for Thomas to be removed from future cases related to the Capitol riot will only increase. Some House progressives have raised the possibility of impeaching Thomas, while other Democrats have floated the idea of a congressional investigation.

Critics have raised concerns about an ethically troubling overlap with her husband's judicial position. Clarence Thomas's handling of election-related cases has raised ethics questions after the new reporting on her outreach.

In January, the Supreme Court blocked Trump's attempt to keep his administration records from being handed over to the House select committee. Clarence Thomas was the lone dissenter. It is not known if the White House records would have been included in the court case.

Clarence Thomas dissented from the Supreme Court decision to turn away a challenge to the election results in Pennsylvania. He wrote that the decision was baffling and befuddling.

House and Senate Democrats sent a letter to Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts this week asking them to explain why they didn't step back from cases related to the Capitol attack or efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Roberts was asked to adopt a code of conduct for Supreme Court justices.
