Lamar Jackson is in contract talks with the Baltimore Ravens.
Lamar Jackson @Lj_era8I love my Ravens I don’t know who the hell putting that false narrative out that I’m having thoughts about leaving stop tryna read my mind🙄
Jackson is in the final year of his first contract and is eligible for an extension. The quarterback, who is representing himself in the negotiations, seems to have not been rushing to complete a deal.
Jeff Zrebiec @jeffzrebiecAsked about the possibility of Lamar Jackson not signing an ext. this year, Bisciotti said: "Unless he has a change of heart and calls Eric and says I’m ready. But it’s like, Eric can’t keep calling him and say, ‘Hey Lamar, you really need to get in here and get this thing done."
Jackson clarified that he plans to stay with the organization that drafted him, despite the speculation about his future with the team.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh recently said he is confident that Jackson will stay with the team.
The circumstances have been unique as hell, in terms of the quarterback's patient approach to negotiations and his decision to shun an agent.
The kid is so obsessed with winning a Super Bowl that he doesn't think. I think he wants that to say that I deserve to be on top. I don't think he is turned on by money because he knows it's coming one way or the other.
A 25-year-old who has already won an award is likely to make a lot of money. Jackson has two Pro Bowl selections in four years and has proved to be one of the most dynamic players in the NFL with 3,673 career rushing yards.
Six players are now averaging at least 40 million dollars per year, according to Spotrac, and Deshaun Watson helped reset the market with his fully guaranteed $230 million deal with the Cleveland Browns.
Jackson's fifth-year option on his deal will pay him $23 million, which is 13th among quarterbacks.
He would be in line with the top players in the NFL if he signed a new deal.
Jackson could finish the contract and play the next two years on the franchise tag, which would start at about $32 million in 2023, according to Over The Cap.
He can keep his options open with the slow negotiation process. He is not looking to force his way out of Baltimore.
