  • At an event at the Florida Capitol, Fried is honoring 7 women.

  • They include abortion rights advocates.

  • GOP state lawmakers passed legislation to limit reproductive rights.

Fried will throw some shade against the Republicans in the legislature and the governor's mansion who supported abortion and gay rights.

Fried will host an event at the Capitol for Women's History Month to honor seven individuals, including abortion and trans rights advocates.

Fried, the only Democrat elected to statewide office in Florida, is also running for governor to take on Gov. Ron DeSantis, a rising star in the Republican Party whom many operatives think has his eye on the White House.

Fried is conducting the event in her official capacity. It will come just two days after DeSantis signed a bill into law that critics have called the "Don't Say Gay" bill because it would limit instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. He is expected to sign a bill that will ban abortions in the state after 15 weeks into a pregnant woman's uterus.

The awards will go to two people, one of which is a co-executive director of Florida Access Network, an organization that helps patients access abortion care through coordinating and funding travel, meals, lodging and childcare.

Fried is a former lobbyist for the medical marijuana industry and will recognize the founder of Minorities for Medical Marijuana.

Other women honored at the event are Cherry Hall Alexander, the former director of Library Services at Tallahassee Community College, Shannon O'Malley, the chief executive officer of Brick Street Farms, and Sharon Wright Austin, a University of Florida political science professor.

Fried has been vocal about her opposition to the Parental Rights in Education Act and the impending abortion ban. She issued a statement through her campaign Monday promising to repeal the education law and slam the Republican legislature for trying to censor our teachers.

Republicans have said that parents should be in charge of their children's education, and that material would be limited to teachers of students in kindergarten through third grade. The language in the education bill is too broad and vague, allowing it to extend to students of all ages and affect teachings and discussions about their own family members who may be gay, trans, or non-binary.

Provisions in the bill would make gay and trans students out to family members who may be unsupportive or even violent.

The 15-week abortion ban hasn't reached the governor's desk yet, but he will sign it. Current state law allows abortion up to 24 weeks.

"These are protections for babies that have heartbeats, that can feel pain, and this is very, very late," he said earlier this month.

In recent years, anti-abortion advocates have pushed 20-week bans, while advocacy groups and doctors who support abortion rights have said this is false.

The measure would affect patients from other states and countries, including the Caribbean and South American countries, according to abortion rights groups. Some patients from out of state travel to Florida to have an abortion.

About 15% of Florida Access Network's clients come from out-of-state, and she was honored to receive the distinction from the commissioner.

She said it was an honor to be recognized for her work in reproductive justice as a Puerto Rican woman who grew up low income.

She recognized the politics of the event.

Pi told Insider that it was a great slap in the face of the governor.
