FedEx is using a delivery tool.
Next year, the delivery company will be testing out a cargo drone from Elroy Air. The hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing plane is more like a helicopter and will take packages between FedEx Express sorting facilities in the Fort Worth, Texas, area.
The drones will stay between FedEx buildings instead of dropping off packages at people's doors or picking up merchants. Elroy was originally focused on air taxis for passengers but is now focused on cargo delivery.
The test flights are expected to start in mid-2023 on Elroy Air's Chaparral aircraft, which can handle up to 500 pounds of cargo and deliver it up to 300 miles away. It will only fly at lower altitudes with packages on board.
Before test flights can begin, FedEx and Elroy have to finish their certification. The aircraft was first announced in January after a successful hover flight with a full cargo load.
