The run is still going strong and the friendly are over. As Scotland stares at their World Cup target, there is juicy stuff to be had.

In June, the side will play a play-off semi-final with Ukraine in order to reach the finals of the tournament.

Can Scotland approach their upcoming date with confidence after drawing Poland and Austria?

Momentum & options galore

The positives first. There are many. After six wins in a row sent Scotland charging into the play-offs, the togetherness and feelgood factor haven't drained away on the return to action after a four-month break.

Scotland are now eight games without a loss after Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Austria and a home draw with Poland.

Even though they were short of their best in Vienna, the men showed a lot of ruthlessness to pinch a 2-0 lead.

Craig Gordon, the man keeping them out, is 39 years old. Scotland has a pair of hands.

John McGinn capped another all-action performance with a top-class goal in the middle of the park, thundering a first-time strike high into the net from Kieran Tierney's delivery to double the lead.

McGinn has 12 goals in 14 games and his importance to the team cannot be overstated.

Billy Dodds said that he has become the most complete Scotland player in a long time.

He doesn't lose the ball, gets about the pitch and is a driving force. He has added goals to his game. A great player. He is my first name on the team sheet.

Che Adams ended the double-header without a goal, but impressed with intelligent link-up play, and Lyndon Dykes will push him all the way after his return from injury.

New players have also been blooded. On a night when Billy and Nathan continued their progress on the international stage, a teenager made his debut for Bologna.

Lewis Ferguson put in a great performance on his first Scotland start.

According to Kenny Miller, Scotland is a really good place and points to a pleasing array of options for Clarke.

He said on Sportscene that he has a chance of playing there.

There are eight players who could really have a case to start in the middle of the field. It shows the strength in depth.

Defensive issues surface in Vienna

Scotland squandered a two-goal lead and looked defensively fragile as Austria eventually capitalised

For a manager who has built his reputation on defensive sturdiness, Scotland's vulnerability at the back in Vienna gives him lots to ponder.

While Scotland were rarely troubled by a Poland side missing Robert Lewandowski last week, Austria coughed up a lot of chances against them.

The visitors could have conceded five or six if not for Gordon. Austria exploited space down both flanks to cause problems as captain Andy Robertson returned at left wing-back.

Scotland was able to keep the hosts out for 75 minutes, but were then breached twice and left hanging on.

It shines a light on the back three of the Scotland team that has yet to be settled. Scott McTominay is a shoo-in for a spot, but Grant Hanley is having a bad season with Canaries and was careless for Austria's first goal as Michael Gregoritsch outfoxed him to head past Gordon.

Willie Miller, a former captain of Scotland, said that the lack of defensive organisation was ridiculous at times.

Neil McCann, a former national team player, said that he thinks Clarke will learn a lot from the Austria game. We will put it away because people think it is just a friendly gesture. The amount of chances for Austria would be a concern.

Pivotal summer looms

Is the play-off picture looking clearer? There was nothing to report after the match on a date for the meeting with Ukraine.

If we play them in June that will be great for everyone, that is my one wish.

If the tie goes ahead, the side could face as many as six games in June.

There are four Nations League matches against Armenia, Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland that will take place in a 10-day period starting on 4 June. The Nations League has an alternative route to the play-offs for Euro 2024.

It will be pivotal in the month.
