The state's Health Department warned New Yorkers to remain vigilant against a virus threat that has not fully abated after a challenging winter, after a sharp rise in COVID cases in central New York.

In New York, the case rates are lower than they were in January and February. The BA.2 omicron subvariant is nowdominant in the Empire State.

The governor's office said the state's daily positivity rate reached 2.9% on Monday. The week-long test positivity rate rose to 2.4% after the state announced eight new coronaviruses deaths.

According to state data, the daily test positivity in Central New York was 9.1%. The New York State Health Department said in a statement that it was closely monitoring the surge.

The recent increase in cases in Central New York highlights the need for everyone to remain vigilant, do their part and get a COVID-19 vaccine and booster dose when eligible, tested following exposure or when developing symptoms, and to stay home and isolated when sick.

She said that people should feel comfortable wearing a mask if they choose to do so indoors, especially if they have a compromised immune system or are close to someone who is vulnerable.

The seven-day positivity rate in New York City was 1.8%.

Vaccinations provide a strong defense against illness. The state's all-time death toll from coronaviruses is over 67,000.

The booster dose improves your protection against severe illness and hospitalization, so don't delay in getting one once you are eligible, Hochul said Monday in a statement.
