Dennis Allen, the new coach of the New Orleans Saints, confirmed Tuesday that the team will use a tight end named Taysom Hill more than a quarterback.
The Saints just signed Jameis Winston to a two-year deal with a base value of $28 million to be their starting quarterback.
It's noteworthy since Hill spent last summer in an open competition with Jameis for the starting quarterback job, which won't be the case again in 2022.
I think the role for Taysom is going to be a lot more of a F tight end type of role. Allen told reporters that he thinks Jamei can be one of the better players in the league in that role. I think you will see him more in that role.
The philosophy of the Saints has always been not to waste Hill on the sideline. He wasn't the designated backup quarterback on game days. They have used him in a number of roles, including at the tight end, wide receiver, running back, and in several special teams roles.
If a similar scenario arises, it is unclear if Hill will still be able to start games at quarterback. It sounds like the Saints want to expand on Hill's other assets.
Since joining the Saints as an undrafted free agent, the former quarterback has become one of the most versatile players in the league. Over the past two years, Hill has started nine games at quarterback and has a 7-2 record. He has 34 career catches for 388 yards and seven touchdown in the regular season, plus another five catches for 32 yards and two scores in the playoffs. He has 1,183 career rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdown.
If Hill remained in a non-quarterback role, he could be worth up to 95 million dollars over the next four years if he became the starting quarterback.
The quarterback position will be up for grabs during training camp and the preseason, but Jameis is looking forward to being the starter for the entire off-season.
I don't have to go into training camp with a question of whether I'm going to be the starter or not,' said Jameis, who went 5-2 as New Orleans' starter last year. We have to move our entire family to Dallas to evacuate for Hurricane Ida.
It was short-lived because I wanted to have an impact on this team. I am excited to have the full reins, to have everything I need. Hopefully everyone in the building agrees with that.
