Jack Leach (left) finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker in the series, Chris Woakes (right) struggled overseas again, and question marks over Joe Root's (centre) future as captain persist

There are more questions around England after another series defeat in the West Indies and a winless run.

With their next Test not until 2 June, when they play New Zealand at Lord's, Jonathan Agnew and the Mirror's Dean Wilson assess which players are in credit, who has work to do and who has gone backwards during the tour.

Zak Crawley

Innings: Six, runs: 184, average: 30.66, high score: 121

He has work to do. He nicked to second slip after hitting a booming drive in the third Test. He had had a good series.

Alex Lees

Innings: Six, runs: 126, average: 21.00, high score: 31.

He has a good technique. He will get one or two more shots in the locker, but Sir Alastair Cook scored a million runs with only three or four shots left. He is in credit for me.

In the end he was the only one who stood firm and it was a bit of a shooter that got him. He has a little bit of credit.

Joe Root

Six, runs, average, 48.16, high score, 153, dismissal, one

I think you need to separate his captaincy from the hundreds he scored. His batting has not been affected by his captaincy troubles. He is in credit from a batting point of view.

Dan Lawrence

Innings: Six, runs: 197, average: 32.83, high score: 91, and two dismissals.

Agnew liked him. It is disappointing that he got out in the second half of the game in Grenada. He would have credit in the bank for me.

Wilson said that he was in credit because he played for the team in both Antigua and Barbados. I would give him a big tick for that because when the conditions were in his favor, he really took advantage of it and elevated the game in Barbados. He found it a little more difficult to line up his off stump in Grenada, but overall there is something encouraging.

Ben Stokes

Innings: Six, runs: 194, average: 32.33, high score: 120, and seven dismissals.

He had a much more demanding tour than England would have liked because of Mark Wood's injury. He was back on the team having had issues in the last couple of years, but they seem to be in the background now. He was playing a strong vice captain role during the tour and it is possible that he is the one who will take over the team. He is a credit.

Jonny Bairstow

Six, runs: 226, average: 45.20, high score: 140

He got a hundred in Antigua, and is always enthusiastic. He has credit.

Ben Foakes

Six, runs: 96, average: 19.20, high score: 42.

He is in the work to do section for me. He did keep well, but I am not sure about him at seven and the run out in the secondinnings in Grenada was a waste of time.

Wilson said that it was a shame for him because he had a couple of opportunities on the tour and couldn't go on. I think he has the ability, even though it is a lot to ask. He gave away his chance.

Chris Woakes

Average: 48.80, best figures: 3-59, runs: 140, average: 35.00

Agnew puts him in the backwards category. I feel a bit harsh because he has had opportunities, but he has not taken them.

Wilson said that he played a lot of cricket since last summer and was asked to come and lead the attack away from home, with a ball that does you no favors. He makes no excuses, he says this is his chance, and there has been no word of mumble or grumble from him. He is a great guy.

Craig Overton

Average: 47.25, best figures: 2-81.

Normally he wouldn't be asked to do it, but he was pressed into it in Grenada because there wasn't much pace in the game. It is clear that he is highly regarded by the selection committee. He needs to work on his accuracy, rather than the way he used to bowl, so he has work to do.

Jack Leach

Best figures: 6-154

It is an interesting one. He is in credit for me even though he was not happy with the way he was bowling. I like that he acknowledges that and is working hard to get better. That is the reason he is in credit for me.

He has had a good tour, he is the leading bowler and he has been bowling over after over. The way he dug England out of a hole in Grenada is credit to him. He has credit.

Saqib Mahmood

Average: 22.83, best figures: 4-79.

He was one of the things I found on the tour. He has credit.

I was looking forward to seeing him play. If Mark Wood hadn't been injured and Ollie Robinson hadn't been fit, he wouldn't have done it. He has shown both real potential and skill. He was the most threatening bowler in the West Indies. I look forward to seeing him in the summer because he has credit in the bank.

Matthew Fisher

Average: 71, best figures: 1-67.

He made a promising debut on a very slow and flat track. He has a nice high action and is very highly rated by the coaches. He is one of the genuine successes of the tour and I would like to see him bowl in England.

Ollie Robinson

I didn't play because of a back spasm.

He has not had a great tour. He would have done well on the pitch. There was a lot of talk about his fitness from the bowling coach and then he had a back spasm, which hasn't allowed him on the pitch at all.

Wilson said that it was a real worry for him and England. He has been out of all three games because of a back spasm. The build-up to the second Test was concerning because everything seemed to be working well, but then something went wrong when he was being considered for selection. He was unavailable due to something that happened between the second and third Test.
