British Airways returned to the airport after two years of retrenchment.

Services will operate under the BA's Air Operators Certificate before moving to a new subsidiary later in the year.

The company's existing subsidiary, BA Cityflyer, will operate the new airline in a similar way.

A number of flights were moved over to Heathrow due to the suspension of European operations.

The return will see short-haul flights to Larnaca, Amsterdam, Paphos and Tenerife operate as part of a network of 35 destinations, with more to be added later this year.

Today marks a significant milestone for British Airways as we operate our first European services from Gatwick in two years.

I am really proud of what we have created at Gatwick, we have an excellent team with lots of new and exciting talent.

I am looking forward to seeing our newest subsidiary grow, adding new routes and providing customers with more options to get away on holiday with a premium British Airways service.

All services will have a business class cabin, which will make them stand out from the crowd.

The airline returned to its home at South Terminal a day after it reopened.

A new check-in zone for long-haul passengers has been opened by the airline.

The new zone sits alongside the airline's Club World desks and gives those travelling in its World Traveller Plus cabin an exclusive check-in.

The rest of the BA network will follow shortly.
