CODA, which earned a historic win for Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, has several ties to Rhode Island.

The film tells the story of a child who is only hearing in her family, hence the acronym which means children of deafness. The movie is about a woman in Gloucester, Massachusetts who is trying to balance her passion for music and her obligations to her family and fishing business.

Here is what the win means for the deafness community.

Marlee Matlin, an Oscar winner and deafness activist, played the mother of a fisherman who works with his wife.

Rebecca Gibel

Rebecca Gibel is an actor who has acted at Trinity Repertory Company.

Bryan Sabbag was a graduate of Providence College.

Rhode Island artists, athletes, scientists, activists, and more will be watching this year.

It was the first Oscar win for the trio and they acted in the film.

Bryan Sabbag: 'Walking on air'

It was a surprise to see how much recognition the movie got.

Gibel was in Portugal and went to sleep hoping that Troy Kotsur would win the best supporting actor award.

I woke up and there were 60 texts on my phone. It must have happened, Gibel said.

Marlee Matlin talks about inclusion and calls on Hollywood to hire more deaf actors.

The first man to receive an acting Oscar was Kotsur. Matlin was the only person who was blind to win the honor. The win meant a lot to the deafness community, which is now seeing more representation in film.

Marilyn Busch: 'This film, these actors and this director created a piece of art'

Until this film, I don't believe that many actors have been given the chance to portray deafness on screen.

The actors and the director created a piece of art that allowed the audience to see what deafness is like on a daily basis.

Why Marlee Matlin put her foot down and insisted that CODA cast deaf actors.

Rebecca Gibel: 'It shows audiences are hungry for smart storytelling'

Gibel acknowledged the film's best picture Oscar as a win for small budget films.

I feel like this is a story that is changing the industry for many reasons, so my first thought was to make sure that the opening of doors for representation in film is solidified.

The actress has a role in the film.

They are waiting for the opening ofSalem's Lot, a film in which both of them have roles. It will be in theaters in September.

There are some things to say about this. There are five craziest moments in Don't Look Up.
