Passengers waited in a security line outside of the airport's terminal on Monday morning as they waited for abandoned rental cars to be towed.

The airport was unable to handle high passenger traffic due to several high-profile sporting events and travelers had to make alternate travel arrangements as they waited in security lines for hours.

Airport officials on Monday issued a fuel shortage alert due to a lack of available fuel supply, a measure that is becoming more common as the airport gets more flights scheduled. If there is a fuel shortage at ABIA, flights should arrive with more fuel than normal.

Kelly Nagel, who was in Austin this weekend for a wedding, said she was among those who left her rental cars with the keys on the front seat to make her flight after sitting in line to return the vehicle for about 30 minutes.

Mancha said the best way to help make security move more quickly is by arriving with plenty of time to spare and not packing prohibited items in their carry-on luggage.
