The New York Giants have not made any calls to other teams about trading running back Saquon Barkley.
The distinction was emphasized by the general manager Monday at the annual meetings, the first time he talked publicly since declaring the team open to a trade. The Giants were trying to get their financials in order so they could shed some of their salary-cap space.
That was taken out of context at the combine. The Giants were rumored to be shopping the running back, but Schoen said he hadn't called any team. If people called on any players, I would listen. I would be irresponsible if I did not. That doesn't mean I'm going to do everything. I haven't called any teams on Saquon.
I have gotten calls about a few of our players. A couple teams have reached out to him. I am not shopping Saquon.
He was the second pick in the draft. He was named the offensive rookies of the year after amassing over 2,000 yards in his first season.
It has been a struggle since then. He tore theACL in his right knee after a high ankle injury in the following year and was hampered by an ankle injury this past season. In the three years since his breakthrough season, he has compiled 2,391 total yards.
Despite being up against the salary cap, the Giants are likely to keep him. Cornerback James Bradberry, who recently made the Pro Bowl, is 28 years old and can still play at a high level, so he is more likely to be moved to create the necessary space.
Bradberry or Barkley will be traded.
I am not going to say that about Bradberry. I will not say that about anyone. People have value. Bradberry is still a high-caliber starting corner.
The fifth-year option on his contract is worth $7.217 million this season.
The guy was the second pick in the draft.
The Giants were aware of the narrative that was being spread. He felt the need to reach out to him immediately.
After completing his media responsibilities in Indianapolis, Schoen called Barkley to clarify the team's intentions.
It would be irresponsible for the team if a team called, and 31 other GMs would say the same thing. It doesn't mean you're going to make a deal or say yes to it
The biggest and most recognizable name on the roster is Barkley. He is one of the more accomplished and talented players.
This isn't going to affect the organization's decision to trade him.
John Mara said he was conscious of that and didn't think it was a major factor. Put the best team on the field and build for the future at the end of the day.
I like him. He has been a good representative for us. I think he is a really good player. I think he could have a big year. At the end of the day, the head coach and general manager make those decisions.
