According to reports, Roman Abramovich and Ukrainian peace negotiators have suffered symptoms of suspected chemical weapons poisoning.
Bellingcat can confirm that three members of the delegation attending the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia experienced symptoms consistent with poisoning with chemical weapons.
One of the victims was a Russian businessman.
During the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, it was reported that Abramovich traveled between the two cities.
The billionaire and at least two senior members of the Ukrainian team developed symptoms that included red eyes, constant and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The health conditions of the trio, which include a politician, have improved and their lives are not in danger, according to the publication.
Bellingcat said thatAbramovich, along with another Russianentrepreneur, had taken part in the negotiations with Umerov. The negotiation round took place on Ukrainian territory and lasted until 10pm.
Three members of the negotiating team retreated to an apartment in Kyiv later in the night and felt a variety of symptoms, including eye and skin inflammation and piercing pain in the eyes. The symptoms persisted until the morning.
The group of negotiators drove from Kyiv to Lviv on the way to Poland and then Istanbul to continue informal negotiations with the Russian side. A Bellingcat investigator was asked to help with an examination.
The experts concluded that the symptoms are most likely the result of international poisoning with a chemical weapon.
Microwave irradiation was an alternative less likely hypothesis. The symptoms subsided over the course of a week.
