Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich is not going to change his mind about what he thinks the quarterback can do in the NFL now that he is in Washington.
Reich thinks he can be a top 10 quarterback. That has to be earned and proven, so we are all hoping that happens for him.
One year after acquiring him from the Philadelphia Eagles, the Colts traded him to the Washington Commanders. The Colts received a third-round pick as well as a third in exchange for the second-round picks. Washington got a seventh-round pick.
Reich said the decision to trade him was unanimous. He was the offensive coach for the first two seasons of the Eagles, and was considered to be the best in the business when the quarterback tore his knee.
I love the guy. Reich said he was excited to see how he would play for the Commanders. We thought highly of him in a lot of ways. We traded for him. Sometimes you cannot explain everything. You just have to make a decision that you think is right.
Last season, he threw 27 touchdown passes to seven interceptions and ranked ninth in total QBR. The Colts decided to trade him, which sent red flags to others.
Reich said there was a consensus. We had already decided that wasn't going to happen. This was thought out. It wasn't a quick decision.
That doesn't mean he has changed his opinion of the quarterback. Ron Rivera said the Colts coach called him after the trade to congratulate him and said he would love to coach him.
They are getting a highly intelligent player who can process a lot of information quickly. Reich said that they were getting a guy who was a prototype NFL quarterback.
Reich said it was a matter of playing consistent, winning football for Wentz to return to the top 10. The Colts had a chance to make the playoffs with a win in the final two games of the season. In the two losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars, the quarterback had a combined total QBR of 13.0, with 58.9% of his passes being completed.
Reich said that he has been a top 10 quarterback in the league. The way he finished that year was likely to be argued. He put the Eagles team on his back in the last four games of the season and made all the plays needed to make the playoffs. We had some good moments this year.
The Colts traded for Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan within a week.
Reich said they were thankful that Matt became available.
Reich sounded similar to what he was saying a year ago. The reunion did not go as planned. Reich said that not everything is a storybook ending. That was just the decision that we felt like was best for our team at the time.
Doug Pederson, who was the Philadelphia coach for five seasons, spoke to Rivera before the trade. The Eagles had an 11-2 record before getting hurt in the 17th game of the season. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl with a backup quarterback. The Eagles went 4-1 in the last three games of the season, and made the playoffs.
But in the end, he finished strong. He threw seven touchdown passes in the final four games as the Eagles made the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Pederson said that he would involve young players in his workouts. He pointed to the work ethic of the player.
Pederson said that they are getting a tremendous leader. I only know him from a couple years ago and it is hard to say what he did last year in Indy and what he can do in Washington, but the guys responded to him.
