ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were working to prove that the Oscars could be relevant to the culture. It was a night for the ages.

Will Smith won the best actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard, which was about the fiery, flawed coach and father of the tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. The ceremony had been derailed when Smith strode onstage from his seat, in what seemed like a pre-planned bit, but Rock just cracked a joke about Smith's wife.

I love you, Jada. Rock said that G.I. Jane 2 can wait. She revealed her diagnosis. In 1997 she shaved her head to play Jane in a movie.

Smith yelled at Rock to keep his wife's name out of his mouth after the altercation. Rock tried to regain his composure, and the stunned audience at home and in the theater tried to figure out what had happened. The best documentary award was presented by Rock, but an emotional acceptance speech by the film's director, Ahmir.

Sean Combs arrived onstage soon after to introduce a celebration from The Godfather.

It was Smith's first Oscar. He was nominated for best actor in both 2002 and 2007.

Smith said in accepting the award that Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family.

He apologized to the academy and his fellow nominees. Smith hopes the academy will invite him back.

Smith said that you have to be able to take abuse in order to do what you do. Have to smile and pretend it's okay.
