CODA has become the first film from a streaming service to win best picture at the Oscars, in a sign of the growing dominance of streamers. The Apple TV Plus film follows the struggles of Ruby Rossi, the only hearing member in the family, as she tries to explore a life away from her family. The rides to CODA were acquired by Apple for $25 million in a bidding war.
CODA's Troy Kotsur won the best supporting actor award for his role in the film, as well as the adapted screenplay award, which was won by Si Heder. Marlee Matlin won the best actress Oscar for her role in Children of a Lesser God, which is the first Oscar win for a deaf actor in 30 years.
None of the films nominated for best picture have taken away the top prize. Amazon was the first company to get a best picture nomination, for Manchester by the Sea, in 2017).
Don't Look Up and The Power of the Dog are two of the films that have been nominated for a best picture award. It received 27 Academy Awards nominations, but only won the best director award for Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog.
According to Variety, Apple spent over $10 million on its Oscars campaign for CODA, which is more than its entire production budget. Tim Cook welcomed the news on the social networking site, calling it a "profoundly beautiful movie" which celebrates our differences.
