The 94th Academy Awards are here after a long and controversial road. All eyes will be on the Power of the Dog and CODA battle for the night's top prize.

Stay here throughout the night as Times columnists Mary McNamara and Glenn Whipp break down the best speeches, biggest upsets and other top stories of Sunday's awards.

The time is 8:42 p.m. Glenn, it's only a little after 8:30. This was enjoyable. Maybe we will do it again next year.

Is it possible that they are giving us permission to follow suit? It feels like it's late, Mary. Very. Very. Late.

The hosts are in their sleep. I thought they did a great job and we were just nine minutes over three hours. I have been told by my Apple watch to stand for the past four. Even on Oscar night, close those rings.

9:00 p.m. The Los Angeles Times website has an essay I wrote yesterday titled "How CODA won best picture", which is now live. The movie is wonderful and sweet. I don't think the picture is the best, but I won't criticize a film that still makes a lump in my throat even after seeing it several times.

Miss Liza Minnelli made a great announcement of the best picture ever. You were correct and I am very happy about it. Not that anyone asked.

The time is 8:34 p.m. The Second Coming? The seventh seal broke?

Gaga and Liza are together. This is the last award. What can follow?

Andrew Garfield has had many great roles this year, but no statuary. Gaga and Liza Minnelli, hang on, you stand up against bigotry.

The time is 8:31 p.m. Oh yeaaah. The awards were given out tonight. I would have liked to see her win, but I had Chastain. She was terrific in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which will probably win one more Oscar than The Power of the Dog.

Jessica Chastain is the best actress. Glenn, how is your card looking now?

Will Smith said it all. What more can be said about this show? What can follow that?

Amy Schumer: Did I miss something? It feels like the vibe in this room has changed. Billy Crystal, please eat your heart out. Again.

The time is 8:23 p.m. If it was a staged speech, Smith would get the Oscar for it.

I understand why people were wondering if the moment with Rock had been faked. Smith pulled a huge heart-wrenching moment out of a pretty terrible temper tantrum. I was floored by the fact that Washington told him to be careful when the devil came for him. It was the most sincere apology I have ever seen on a show. What a night.

Love will make you do crazy things.

Smith began his acceptance speech by saying that Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. Thank you to Venus and Serena for trusting me with their story, and thank you to the entire Williams family for trusting me with their story. I want to apologize to my fellow nominees.

8:08 p.m. It is a wonderful victory. The Power of the Dog was nominated for 12 Academy Awards. Since Mike Nichols won for The Graduate, a director winning for a movie that takes nothing else hasn't happened.

She does! Thank you. Let's talk about how terrific Campion is and how great it is that she finally won this category, became the third woman to do so, and that two women have finally won it back to back for the first time in Oscar history. Can you imagine a world in which men winning for directing two years in a row would be cause for celebration? She is an icon and though icons don't need shiny things, it is still nice when they get them. Will Smith is going to beat Jane Campion's historic win. It's really sad. Men.

The time is 8:01 p.m. It's true, but Kevin Costner is talking about the importance of directors and the power of movies. If Jane Campion wins for a film about the toxic culture of masculinity.

It feels like that performance took place a long time ago. In the past.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's EGOT was denied when the pair of Finneas and Eilish won for best song. This win seemed pre-ordained when it was announced that they would be writing and performing the latest Bond anthem. It's still exciting.

7:44 p.m. No. The category should be announced now.

Is anyone watching the ceremony right now? Are we just replaying the slap over and over, waiting for the best actor to be presented?

Do you give a guy an Oscar if he just hit your host? The academy can stop worrying about those 8 pre-telecast wins.

7:44 p.m. Jada said she was not coming because Rock mocked Will and she had boycotted the event. Doesn't she have a show on TV? I wasn't invited to the Oscars and Jada was boycotting them.

7:44 p.m. I wonder if people who have been following on social media are tuning in. It was an over-the-top response. Rock should not call out a woman's appearance. Even when we almost missed the deadline with the win, I never felt this anxious during the Oscars.

We are waiting to see what Smith says when he wins the Oscar. They would guarantee no one would tune out if they had saved this award to the last prize.

7:30 p.m. Smith was laughing at at least one thing. That was one of the most unnerving Oscar moments I have ever seen. I wonder how it played in the room.

I think he owes a couple of words to Questlove.

He doesn't seem to be sorry. I was making fun of Sean Penn. You have to think that Rock didn't know about Jada's condition.

Yes! Is he going to apologize? Double down?

I can think about what will happen when Will Smith wins an Oscar.

7:30 p.m. Jada Pinkett Smith has hair loss. She has talked about it. Will Smith didn't like Rock's joke. Yes, wow. I need to watch that again.

When Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, Smith got up and slapped Rock. Not good. It was very unfortunate for Questlove who just won the best documentary award.

That didn't look scripted.

I think it's terrible.

What? Just. Happened?

What just happened to Chris Rock? Will Smith lost his shit? His exchange with Rock is now looking like it was taken aback by the longest Oscar speech ever.

7:26 p.m. She received threats after that speech and was blacklisted. She probably doesn't want to come back. If she wanted to come back.

Glenn! The Oscars reunion is supposed to keep older people watching. That would be a wonderful moment. Where is she now?

They keep talking about the Oscars reunion. Is it possible to have a Godfather Oscars reunion and not invite Littlefeather? The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about the Oscars is her acceptance of the award for Brando.

Billie Eilish and Finneas perform at the 94th Academy Awards.

7:30 p.m. Glenn! The yout is supposed to be drawn by Billie. Not every Bond theme can be Skyfall, but it definitely could have gone after that tribute early on.

It was more exciting than that performance by Eilish. Nowhere to go but up!

As always, wondering how this show is taking so long.

7:30 p.m. It is a crime against the Oscars to devote every minute to the fan. Is it possible that I would feel differently if they weren't involved? Maybe. I don't believe any producer worth the title would give up the chance to have Samuel L. Jackson and Elaine May on their show.

Samuel L. Jackson received multiple bear hugs and a huge amount of joy when he received an Oscar from Denzel Washington. Are we going to see that? Did you see any of the other great moments from the Governors Awards ceremony? Elaine May and Liv Ullmann were also honored. We are better.

Is there a contest on the social networking site? Will the Army of the Dead win and shake my faith in social media?

6:30 p.m. It's seriously. The game is over when anyone makes a touchdown. Even though I want it to win, I'm happy it won this category. I am concerned that Sian Heder's dress does not have pockets.

There you go. The best picture is won by the screenplay.

You aren't getting a Shabbat invite at the Haims.

I don't like Licorice Pizza so that doesn't bother me at all. I thought King Richard might win, but I needed a story about how Protestant families were impacted by the Troubles.

I knew Kenneth Branagh was going to win. There are 11 nominations for Paul Thomas Anderson. Zero awards. The best filmmakers are honored by the academy.

6:30 p.m. Megan Thee Stallion's performance came late in the ceremony and nobody seems happy about it. What time do kids go to bed? I think they can see it on TikTok tomorrow.

Encanto's "We Don't Talk About Bruno" didn't get nominated for an Oscar. The performance on the show is amazing. The academy doesn't care about what people want.

6:30 p.m. Jenny Beavan was the first winner to be played off, and the show does feel like it is moving at an admirable clip. We will see if that holds.

She has an A game, but she always looks amazing. It was a perfect choice for the presentation.

I like the win as well. There is also a dress and eyewear combo for her. If you are going to present costume design, you need to bring your A game.

Also, thrilled that cruella won for costume. The fashion was the third main character in that film.

That is true. Politics can be listed as a potential reason for decreasing audiences. I'm not sure if I buy it, but it comes up in the comments section. In such a divided time, there is no us and them.

6:30 p.m. Everyone got a memo from the academy that people hate politics in awards shows. Stay away from politics. I think we can all agree about Ukraine. The moment you mentioned was effective to me. Maybe we will see more of them.

The academy calls for a moment of silence for the people of Ukraine and encourages viewers to support them. I was surprised that no one mentioned the invasion in their speeches. I thought there would be more blue and yellow. There was no mention of the controversy over the decision to award 8 Oscars before the show.

6:30 p.m. IfDrive My Car is going to win best picture, it would need to take international film as well. I think Drive My Car will have to be content with one Oscar. It might pull off a surprise in an adapted screenplay. I think that will prevail there.

I would like to thank my wife, because she helped me win the best international feature award.

Are we halfway through? Tiffany Haddish wore a dress to the set. I am wondering why she doesn't host more awards shows.

Being able to incorporate a Popeye impression into a moving tribute to his father sums up the range in Kotsur's performance.

6:30 p.m. Yes! The emotion in that speech! We watch the Oscars because of that.

That is preparation! Marlee Matlin was the first Deaf male actor to win an Oscar. The interpreter has a shaky voice as he talks about his father.

She signs Troy's name.

Yuh-Jung Youn! Has entered the building. The woman who had the best acceptance speech last year, for her role in Minari, apologized in advance for mispronouncing the nominees names.

6:30 p.m. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Wanda Sykes should jazz things up. It is a big commercial for the Academy Museum. The Academy Museum has a funny commercial with bonus points for "white chick" reference. Is it because those 8 categories got moved?

That's right. Has he inquired about what is different about this year's ceremony? I'm wondering what that is right now. It feels like the same show as the Oscars because of the awkward pre-taped presentations.

My TV suddenly switched to Winning Time, which my sleeping husband is recording. I don't know how to deal with TVs. Will I make a plug for our new show while I change rooms? My husband is watching the Oscars again because of my frantic obscenities. Will Packer, you are welcome.

6:30 p.m. If my movie was nominated for an animated feature, documentary feature and international film, I would be honored, but that has never happened before. Probably not. Of course, only one of the categories has been announced, but I can't see Summer of Soul.

It is amazing to see an animated film like. The creators of Encanto don't say anything about the gay controversy that caused Disney to leave. Since so much is going on in the world, it is a bit weird that it has been a very non- political Oscars so far. Maybe everyone is happy to be back.

It's too bad they're not doing it right now. That would wake him.

My husband has fallen asleep. In case you were wondering.

5:00 p.m. 60 Years of Bond is a dull idea. Isn't it 60 years of the same movie, starring a bunch of different guys?

60 Years of 007 is fun, but not enough. I think Daniel Craig is the best Bond, and I like that it has a Doctor Who-like franchise. I don't think so. I will try to keep my TV nerd out of harms way. It is a TV show. It's nice to have hosts who have done a lot of TV. Stop now.

Keep in mind the tennis ball green color scheme. It was a missed opportunity for Will Smith. I like the weird seating at the front of the set. The whole thing looks great if you are high, but I promised our overlords I would keep the edibles away until we were done.

I am not convinced by this set. What do you think?

5:00 p.m. It's not surprising that Dune takes visual effects. When these big teams come up and only one or two start to speak, I always feel bad, but they all have Oscars and I don't.

There were reports that the pre-show winners would hold their Oscars upside down in a show of protest. We haven't seen that yet.

You are daring the gods to give you the best picture. Loving the acceptance speech for The Queen of Basketball, but hates the cut-in from the pre-taped categories. The best thing about the Oscars is that they are live.

5:44 p.m. That's five for Dune, with a likely win for visual effects to come. That will be it.

I'm not sure why they are announcing cinematography. Woody Harrelson says that the most words he has ever spoken here are the three Oscar nominations. So far, it's a sweep. Glenn is still holding with Mad Max: Fury Road.

White men can't jump! Rosie Perez says that she is the only sober one up here.

5:00 p.m. How much time was saved? Two minutes?

Did they just announce the nominees for best sound, which we know is already won by Dune? One way to make it fresh.

It is proof that we have entered a new stage of the Pandemic. I apologize, but did she just call out Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and give them a pat-down? We entered a new stage of the Oscars.

5:00 p.m. 60 years ago, DeBose won the Oscar for her role in West Side Story, while Rita Moreno won for the same role. The first openly queer woman of color was DeBose.

Bonus points when the mama is in the house.

It's the only reason to win an Oscar. The camera is following her off stage. I hope they keep doing that.

An Afro-Latina woman is finding her strength in art. DeBose gave a great speech. The shoutout and cutaway to her mother was beautiful.

Ariana DeBose is a supporting actress. I know you had this one, Glenn, the first queer woman of color to win an Oscar and the very best thing in West Side Story. I had this one.

There are clips from movies again. I'm happy for clips!

H.E.R. has sunglasses. I'm dead.

Okay. The actress is supporting her. Ariana DeBose arrives.

I loved the shade.

It's like making a movie about Michael Jordan and just showing the bus trips between games, it's innovation.

I'm Amy Schumer or as they know me in Hollywood, I said no. She seems to be delivering a more traditional opener.
