A 94th Academy Awards that steadily maintained a positive spirit was shattered by an unbelievable exchange after Will Smith took offense to a joke made by Chris Rock about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith slapped Rock after Rock joked that he was looking forward to a sequel. Smith yelled at Rock to keep Jada Pinkett Smith's name out of his mouth.

That was the greatest night in the history of television, Rock said, before awkwardly returning to presenting the best documentary.

The audience and viewers at home were shocked by the moment. Daniel Kaluuya came up to hug Smith after the commercial break, while Denzel Washington escorted him to the side of the stage. The two people talked and hugged and Tyler came over to talk with them.

Smith won the Oscar for best actor for his role in King Richard. Smith took the stage again after what seemed likely to be one of the most notorious moments in Academy Awards history.

Smith's acceptance speech was between apology and defense.

Smith said that Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. He said that he was being called on to love people and protect people.

Williams shared that Washington told him to be careful at the highest point in his life.

Smith apologized to the academy and his fellow nominees.

Art imitates life. Smith said he looked like the crazy father.

The show had been running well up until that point. Ariana DeBose was the first Afro-Latina to win an Academy Award for supporting actress.

The Power of the Dog was directed by Jane Campion, who won the Oscar for best director. Campion is only the third woman to win the best director award. This is the second year in a row that a woman has won the directing award.

The producers of this year's Oscars decided to use one of the biggest stars in the world to kick off the show, in order to revive the awards place in pop culture. After an introduction from Venus and Serena Williams, Bey performed her nominated song "Be Alive" in an elaborately choreographed performance.

The show began from the Dolby Theatre.

Hall said that they are at the Oscars. Where movie lovers unite and watch TV.

Three female hosts were cheaper than one man, and the Lady Gaga drama was called "cheaper than one man" by the trio. Their most pointed political point came at the end of their routine, in which they promised a great night and then mentioned Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill.

We are going to have a gay night for you people in Florida.

Ariana DeBose was the first openly LGBTQ actor and first Latina to win the best supporting actress award. Her win came 60 years after Rita Moreno won for the same role in the original West Side Story.

An openly queer woman of color is an Afro-Latina who found her strength through art. DeBose said that if anyone has ever questioned their identity or found themselves living in the gray spaces, I promise you there is indeed.

Marlee Matlin is the only person with deafness to win an Academy Award. He received a standing ovation while many in the audience waved their hands in the air.

The CODA community, the disabled community, and the deafness community are all represented by this song.

Encanto was the winner of the best animated film. Miranda missed the ceremony after his wife tested positive for cancer. One of the year's most acclaimed films, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's three-hour Japanese drama Drive My Car, won for best international film.

After two years of the H1N1, and under a warm California sun Sunday, the Hollywood rite of glamour got into swing, with a jammed red carpet and a COVID-tested audience.

To help regain the cultural spotlight, the Oscars leaned heavily on musical performances. That made for a ceremony that was often upbeat. A 30-second moment of silence was led by the Ukrainian-born actress. Sean Penn was one of the stars who pushed the academy to have the Ukrainian President speak at the ceremony.

Politics were not the center of attention, despite a few blue ribbons spotted on the red carpet. The movies were an escape from the Oscars. Tony Hawk and BTS were brought in by producers to get more viewers. Some things worked better than others. In a moment unlikely to be remembered as an Oscar highpoint, the fan favorite rankings were voted on by users.

The feel-good movies did well. Sian Heder's family drama "CODA" won for best adapted screenplay. Kenneth Branagh's autobiographical "Belfast" was the best original screenplay.

Eilish and her brother Finneas won for their Bond theme to "No Time to Die", which was released before the swine flu started. The film was delayed many times.

The first eight awards of the night were handed out before the start of the ABC show. The movie theater was almost full in time for the screening. The academy calls it the golden hour. Speeches were edited into the broadcast.

It was the first time in two years that an in-person Oscars had begun. More than 70 Oscar winners warned that the shift would turn some nominees into second-class citizens.

It kept going through the night because it got out to an early lead. The biggest blockbusters of the year, including Dune, won for production design, cinematography, editing, visual effects, sound and Hans Zimmer's score. It was expected to clean up in the technical categories despite not being favored in the top awards.

One chance for Oscar history was denied by the cinematography win of Greig Fraser. The sole Oscar category that has never been won by a woman is best cinematography, and some had been rooting for Ari Wenger, who lensed Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog".

The best makeup and hairstyling award went to Linda Dowds, who worked on "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Jessica Chastain was among the many academy members who thought all the awards. The winners were hugged by Chastain as they took the stage.

The make-up artist said that he hopes that everyone takes a moment to look at the people who work hard on the set.

The Queen of Basketball was the winner of the best short documentary film. Executive producers include Curry and O'Neal. The best fiction short was "The Long Goodbye", which was a film starring Riz Ahmed.

It is for everyone who feels like they are stuck in No Man's Land. We will meet you there.

There was alarm over the Oscars falling ratings. The show drew 10 million viewers last year, less than half of the 23.6 million who watched the year before. It was closer to 40 million a decade ago.

The Power of the Dog and Campion's gothic western came in with 12 nominations and a good chance of winning the top award. Sian Heder's deaf family drama is considered the favorite despite only receiving three nominations. Apple TV+ has spent a lot of money to promote the movie and a win would be a big victory.
