The leader of North Korea has vowed to develop more powerful means of attack, days after the country launched its first intercontinental missile in more than four years.

The statement suggests that North Korea might test a nuclear device soon as it pushes to modernize its arsenal and increase pressure on the Biden administration. Analysts say the Hwasong 17 was designed to reach anywhere in the U.S. mainland and was launched last Thursday.

Kim expressed a resolve to build up the country's attack capability during a photo session with scientists and others involved in the Hwasong-17 test.

One can prevent a war, guarantee the security of the country and contain and put under control all threats if one has the powerful military power that cannot be stopped by anyone.

Kim said that North Korea will develop more powerful strike means and that he expects his country to perfect its nuclear war deterrent.

The Hwasong-17 flew to a maximum altitude of 6,248 kilometers and traveled 1,090 kilometers before landing in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. If the missile is fired on a flatter trajectory, it could fly as far as 15,000 kilometers, enough to reach the US mainland and beyond.

The world's biggest road-mobile missile system, the Hwasong-17, is believed to be about 25 meters long. The missile's size suggests it is meant to carry multiple nuclear warheads, since the North already has single-warhead ICBMs that could hit most of the U.S.

The U.S.-led diplomacy aimed at persuading North Korea to denuclearize has largely stopped since 2019. The Biden administration has urged North Korea to return to talks without preconditions, but it has responded that Washington must drop its hostility first and that he has taken steps to expand his weapons arsenal.

Some experts say Kim could conduct another ICBM launch, a launch of a satellite-carrying rocket or a test of a nuclear device as he works to perfect his weapons technology, dial up pressure on the United States and secure stronger internal royalty.

South Korea said on Monday that there are signs that North Korea is restoring previously demolished tunnels. Lee said that a nuclear test by North Korea would be a serious threat to international security and that the North must halt any related acts immediately and return to talks.

The Hwasong 17 liftoff was the North's most serious weapons launch since it tested a previously developed ICBM. Its last nuclear test was in September of last year.
