John Mara, co-owner of the New York Giants, insisted that the team would not be paying out of court after Brian Flores, the Giants' head-coaching candidate, accused the organization of faking an interview.
Mara claimed that the organization had no contact with Bill Belichick, who the lawsuit says accidentally told Flores he wouldn't be getting the job before he was interviewed.
Flores claimed in the suit that the Giants had made their decision to hire Brian Daboll, a white candidate, before he received his chance in front of the team's brass. Flores is black.
Mara insists that it is all false and that he is confident that the Giants went through a thorough and fair process.
Mara said on Sunday that the allegations are false. We are very comfortable with our hiring process. It was a fair process and we ended up making the decision that we did based on a lot of other factors.
Mara insists that the Giants did not communicate their intentions with the other team. The Giants and the Pats played a preseason game in the summer, and Mara hasn't spoken to the coach since.
The Giants had a former employee in the form of Belichick. The previous Giants coach, Joe Judge, was helped by him.
Mara doesn't think it matters.
The truth will come out eventually, he said. The day after Judge was fired, he reached out to the former Dolphins head coach.
The Giants conducted in-person interviews before the text exchange that Flores had with Belichick. Mara and the Giants have integrity in question.
Mara said that it is never pleasant.
It is not a price that he is willing to accept.
Mara said that it was false and that they had a thorough process. Interviewed some great people. We made the decision based on a lot of factors. The relationship between the general manager and Brian was a factor. At the end of the day, we thought Brian was the best fit for us.
They had worked together in Buffalo for three years. The assistant general manager was Schoen.
Flores was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as their senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach.
