When Brian Flores filed his lawsuit against the NFL and three teams, Mike Tomlin felt it was his duty to stay close to the former Miami Dolphins coach.

I owed him that, and I didn't want him to feel like he was on an island. I was in a position to give that. I think that started our conversations.

Flores joined the staff as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach after receiving phone calls of advice.

It really ran its course rather quickly, to be quite honest with you, I think the natural discussion began when it became evident he was not going to get a head job. It doesn't take a lot of time to realize that you can use Brian Flores on your staff.

Flores told Bryant Gumbel of Real Sports that he accepted the job on Friday.

Flores told Gumbel that he called Coach T. to get some counsel. That conversation turned into an opportunity in Pittsburgh.

It's... I am a very capable coach in this league. I think he saw a situation where a very experienced coach who was also a black coach could help his staff.

Despite his pending lawsuit against the league, Art Rooney II hired Flores despite the fact that he was already employed by the team.

It is an honor to be a part of something that the Rooney family started and led for a long time before my existence here.

Prior to his February conversations with Flores, the man who called himself a "lone-wolf type" admitted he didn't know the former New England Patriots assistant well. Flores had a track record that made him an important addition to the staff.

He is a senior defensive assistant and linebacker coach, but he will help us and help me.

We are talking about a lot of things. It has been fun to have him, whether it is the calendar, the acquisition or evaluation of talent, or taking care of players. His contributions are going to be significant.

A little more than a month into his tenure, Flores is already having an impact. Jack spoke with Flores after he was released from the Jacksonville Jags.

Jack signed a two-year, $16 million deal, saying that he and his friend have something to prove. I am excited.

I feel like we kind of vibed about that connection. I am very excited to work with him and see how we can collaborate to make this thing happen.
