According to reports, a former Ku Klux Klan leader is no longer eligible to run.

Chester Doles said his affidavit to run for a commissioner of a north Georgia county was approved in March. The Georgia Republican Party flagged his application because of his criminal record.

Doles wants a civil rights attorney to fight the decision.

If this has to be interpreted by the courts, so be it, Doles said. I have thousands of dollars in campaign signs that have been pledged for radio commercials.

Doles was sentenced to four years in prison for federal weapons charges in 2003 and for beating a Black man in 1993. He ran for a seat on the board.

Georgia law allows people who have been convicted of a felony to run for office if at least 10 years have passed since they were sentenced. They have to pay fines and avoid committing more felonies.

Doles told reporters that his rights were restored last year. Georgians need to apply to the State Board of Paroles for rights restoration. Doles has a stamped and signed application.

Doles said on the same day that he was fully qualified as a candidate and all filing fees have been paid.

According to CBS 46, Doles did not get his rights restored in time to qualify for the race.

It's not clear if Doles completed the process for rights restoration. His name is not on the list of candidates for Lumpkin County.

The candidacy affidavit requires applicants to swear that they are not making false statements.

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan used to call Doles the Grand Klaliff. He was a member of the National Alliance and the Hammerskins. Doles said he has changed his ways and apologized for racism.

He compared himself to Black civil rights leaders in an earlier interview.

He was on the City Council. He was arrested 168 times. John Lewis was arrested more times than anyone else, so it's not a reason to disqualify him.

Doles ran his campaign on patriotism and anti-wokeness.
