Biniam Girmay
Girmay finished second in the Under-23 race at the Road World Championships in November 2021, becoming the first black African to achieve a podium at the UCI Road World Championships

Biniam was the first African cyclist to win a one-day classic.

It is unbelievable, amazing. I didn't expect this, said the Eritrean, 21.

We changed our plan a few days ago. We came to get a good result. This race is amazing.

A group of four riders broke away in the last 30 km and raced to victory.

This changes a lot in the future, especially for all African riders.

The Frenchman was beaten on the line when he tried to chase him down.

The Tour of Flanders is the second Monument classic of the season and is often seen as a warm-up for Belgium's biggest race.

"I suffered on the cobbles, it's not exactly comfortable", said Girmay on what was his first race on cobbles.

I knew the others were strong, but I was confident.

There is no plan for Girmay to take part in Flanders.

The women's race was won by a road world champion.

Pfeiffer Georgi was the highest-ranked British rider.

The winner of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was from Colombia, with Richard Carapaz of Ineos Grenadiers coming in second.

Higuita won the green and white jersey after finishing the week-long event 16 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 52 seconds ahead of Joao Almeida.

The first ever World Tour stage won by a British man was on Friday in Vilanova i la Geltru.

The final stage was won by Vernon's team-mate.

Hugh Carthy was the highest-place Briton in 27th place.

The race was marred by the collapse of Italian rider Sonny Colbrelli on stage one after an uphill sprint finish.

The Italian rider was taken to the hospital for further checks after he required defibrillation near the finish line.

He was released on Sunday and will return to Italy for more tests.
