The besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol may be on the verge of becoming a Ukrainian Alamo, according to a US general.

The invasion of Ukraine has caused a terrible loss of innocent life, according to retired Gen. David Petraeus.

The situation in Mariupol has become a bit of a Ukrainian Alamo. It is going to be taken.

The 1836 Battle of the Alamo is considered to be one of the worst battles of the Texas Revolution, in which Texas colonists rebelled against Mexican forces, forcing them out of their territory and occupying the Alamo, an old Spanish mission near San Antonio. The Mexican forces slaughtered the Texas troops at the Alamo.

The city of Mariupol, located in southeast Ukraine, has been the subject of a brutal assault by Russia that has laid waste to the city's homes, schools and maternity hospitals. Many of the residents are without food, water, or electricity. Despite being agreed upon with the Russians, multiple attempts at humanitarian corridors and ceasefires have failed.

Russian forces bombed a movie theater in the city, trapping 1,300 people. About 300 people were killed in the airstrike.

The city will go down in history for its role in war crimes, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The capture of Mariupol by the Russians will cause some peril for Ukraine, according to retired Gen. Petraeus.

It will free up a number of battalions that were the ones that have been closing the circle, closing the noose on Mariupol, who can then push further north and perhaps enable Russia to achieve what it has now said, as it has redefined its objectives.

The next few days are going to be very tenuous as we see what happens in Mariupol, what the Russians are able to do as a result of it, and then the Ukrainians can respond.
