Max Kucheriavyi: Kelty Hearts head to title thanks to 'diamond of a boy's x-factor'

On Saturday night, the phone call to his parents in war-torn Ukranian had extra meaning.

Kelty were promoted to the Scottish Professional Football League after the 19-year-old scored the title-clinching goal.

As the celebrations got into full swing at a bouncing and sun-drenched New Central Park, his thoughts turned to his loved ones.

I will call my parents, have a long chat with them, and enjoy the celebrations with the boys, he said.

All my family is in Ukraine. They had to leave Kyiv, but are now in a safer place. They are safe and can keep in touch with me.

I call them every day to check on how they are. I hope they are just as proud of me as I am.

The mental torture of worrying for loved ones during Russia's invasion of his homeland has been alleviated by football.

Three days after the attack on Ukraine, the teenager moved to Kelty from the Premiership club.

He said that it has been a very hard month for him and that he tries to focus on football as much as possible.

I try to enjoy every second of football. It is good to play, train and forget everything. Do what I love.

His first senior goal, in his seventh outing for Kelty, will be a moment to remember for the rest of his career.

Kevin Thomson paid tribute to the youngster's strength of character off the pitch.

He has family over in Ukraine and we have had to talk to St Johnstone to find out what the message is from them so we can follow that.

A diamond of a boy. I didn't know he could head the ball the way he did today. We are delighted with him, he is a top young boy.
