Qantas has just revealed a new ultra long haul route, which will be the carrier's longest route to the United States. When airlines from Australia and New Zealand announce new international service, it's a sign that aviation is starting to recover from the Pandemic. Qantas will be adding a 4x weekly flight between Dallas andMEL as of December 2, 2022. The schedule for the flight is as follows: The flight from Melbourne to Dallas leaves at 2PM and arrives at 12:45PM. QF22 Dallas to Melbourne leaves at 7:10PM and arrives at 5:45AM.Qantas adds Melbourne to Dallas route in December 2022
On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the flight will operate in both directions. It will cover a distance of 8,992 miles, and is blocked at 15hr45min in the east and 17hr35min in the west.
This route will complement Qantas' existing Sydney to Dallas route, which is scheduled to be operated daily in peak season with a Boeing 787-9, though there is no indication yet of the A380.
Qantas will use a Boeing 787-9 for this new route, with just 236 seats, which is a pretty sparse configuration, as many full service airlines have nearly 300 seats on these planes. Qantas has 42 business class seats in the Boeing 787-9s, in a 1-2-1 configuration.
There are 28 premium economy seats in the 787-9s.
There are 166 seats in the economy.
This flight will be one of the longest flights in the world.
It doesn't really come as a surprise that Qantas is launching a route. Dallas is a huge hub for American and they have a joint venture with Qantas. This route will enable all kinds of one-stop routes. I'm not sure if there's much of a connection beyond Melbourne.
There is something else that I find interesting, and maybe I am just reading too much into things. It seemed to me that Qantas was increasing its long haul network out of Brisbane. Qantas had put a route to Chicago on sale, but it was put on hold due to the swine flu.
Qantas is adding an all new route out of Melbourne, rather than launching the route that was announced pre-pandemic. Qantas doesn't have a massive long haul fleet so I wonder if this is part of a strategy shift in the long run.
Qantas will be adding a new route in December of 2022. One of the longest routes in the world will be operated 4x weekly with a Boeing 787-9. It is always cool to see new flights.
Unless you live in one of the two cities, this one is not special, but it is unique for how long it is.
What do you think about Qantas?
